MRAG is hiring multiple At-Sea Monitors to collect data onboard domestic fishing vessels the Northeast fisheries from New York to Maine. At-sea monitors collect scientific, management, compliance, and other data at sea through observations of fishing operations, interviews of vessel captains and crew, photographing catch, and measurements of selected portions of the catch and fishing gear. At-sea monitors collect data for fishing effort, location, and retained and discarded catch for each tow while aboard the vessel. They may also collect length measurements from segments of the catch. At-sea monitors record, collect, and photograph marine mammals, sea turtles and sea birds incidentally caught in the fishing gear.

Groundfish vessels routinely operate out of ports from New York to Maine. Trips can range from 1-14 days in duration. The vessels operate in ocean waters, 3-200 miles offshore in all weather conditions. Vessels are generally 30-100 feet in length. Crew members and at-sea monitors live and sleep in cramped quarters, often in damp conditions and share common facilities. On some vessels, the crew does not speak English. Because of the size of the vessels, motion sickness can be debilitating for some individuals. At-sea monitors must be willing to travel to cover locations other than their primary ports.

The position requires:
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the natural sciences.
• A minimum of 30 semester hours or equivalent in the biological sciences.
• At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics
• Experience with data entry on computers.
• Physical fitness, including the ability to swim 100m, tread water for three (3) minutes, don an immersion suit in 60 seconds, to climb a ladder, to lift and carry 50 pounds correctly.
• Not susceptible to chronic motion sickness.
• The ability to live in confined quarters.

Work will begin May 1st, training begins in mid April and consist of 10 days. Monitors will earn $18.09/hr while deployed for hours worked and are eligible for overtime at $22.11/hr. Will include vacation, holiday pay. Regular pay grade steps will be based on seaday experience in the fishery and prior experience in other MRAG observer programs.

Please send resume, three (3) references, and college transcripts to Bryan Belay at bryan.belay@mragamericas.com or mail to 1810 Shadetree Circle, Anchorage, AK 99502. MRAG Americas will accept resumes until the positions are filled.
