TWS is seeking an Associate Specialist to lead the implementation of a new leadership program to recruit, train and support a diverse network of volunteer leaders and conduct outreach to build support for permanent protections for the San Gabriel Watershed and Mountains.

Associate Specialist Description

The Associate Specialist will oversee the development and implementation of a new leadership development program. This program will train volunteer leaders in grassroots advocacy techniques to support a National Recreation Area and other permanent designations for the San Gabriel Mountains. This program is collaborative in nature. Guest instructors will be enlisted from a diverse and expanding coalition of organizations and individuals. The 10 – 12 lead volunteers will work in collaboration with a partnering organization for the duration of the program.

The Associate Specialist will ensure the success of the program by providing continuity among sessions, leading debriefs, conducting one-on-one check-in’s with leaders, and facilitating the relationships with Leaders and partnering organizations. In addition, the Associate Specialist will ensure the enduring impact of the program by recruiting the next class of leaders and providing follow-up and connections for graduating leaders.
Finally, in conjunction with the primary role of coordinating the Leadership Development Program, the Associate Specialist will also engage in outreach and communication in support for the San Gabriel Mountains within the communities of the San Gabriel Valley.

This individual must be willing to work on many projects, juggle competing priorities, and be able to demonstrate leadership and initiative.  Strong communication skills, flexibility, and a “can-do” attitude are essential.  Experience working in a coalition setting is highly desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and lead program to recruit and train diverse volunteers for campaign work in Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley;
  • Coordinate multiple stakeholders, volunteers and partner institutions;
  • Through grassroots and grasstops organizing, build support for protective federal designations in the San Gabriel Watershed and Mountains;
  • Work with coalition partners to develop strategy, execute plans, and maintain positive relationships;
  • Lead hands-on restoration projects and other outings in the San Gabriel Mountains;
  • Short-duration travel to attend meetings, give presentations, and conduct field visits is required

Qualifications
 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in the natural or social sciences;
  • At least two years experience with volunteer coordination and/or campaign organizing;
  • Spanish fluency;
  • Experience working with communities of color;
  • Experience with political or advocacy campaign work;
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Detail-oriented;
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments; 
  • Experience working on CA environmental issues;
  • Passion for and commitment to wildland conservation;
  • Ability to work independently and on a team.

This is a one year position within The Wilderness Society with the possibility of extension (funding pending).  The work environment and compensation are competitive with university, government, and nonprofit positions.
