2. Outline of the Group |
The Forest Conservation Team is part of the IGES Natural Resources Management Group. Through policy research, capacity building and outreach, the Team aims to contribute to the development of policy instruments for the sustainable management of forests in the Asia-Pacific region. The Forest Conservation Team is engaged in research from local to international levels that includes a strong community-focused fieldwork component in developing countries. Its key areas of research are 1. Forests and climate change, and 2. Instruments to guide, verify and reward the trade in legal and sustainable wood products. |

3. Duties and Responsibilities |
Under the guidance of the Group Director
(1) |
Analyse and report on the development of selected national REDD+ systems, demonstration activities and the international REDD+ negotiations |
(2) |
Contribute to the development of a national governance standard for guiding and assessing REDD+ plans and activities |
(3) |
Assist with preparing, facilitating and reporting on REDD+ workshops |
(4) |
Work closely with other Team members to ensure high quality research products and activities across the Team’s work program. |

4. Qualifications |
(1) |
Education Doctoral Degree in a field relevant to forest management and climate policy/science, or a Master Degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 5-years professional experience |
(2) |
Understanding and Experience a) Good understanding of REDD+, including challenges to implementing the concept in tropical developing countries b) Research in developing countries on forest policy c) Demonstrated success in organising workshops/seminars and a strong track record of high quality publications d) Experience working in multicultural work environments |
(3) |
Willingness and ability a) Ability to work cooperatively as part of a research team, and to engage with a broad range of stakeholders - government, academia, industry, NGOs - across countries. b) Demonstrated willingness to take initiative and to work with limited supervision. c) Desire to link policy research with practice. |
(4) |
Language proficiency a) Excellent oral and written communication skills in English b) Working level of Japanese ability would be an advantage, but not essential |

Hours of work: 9:30-18:00 |

Holidays: Saturdays and Sundays, summer holidays (three days), the end and the beginning of the year (29, 30, 31 of December and 2, 3 of January) and national holidays. |

Annual vacation: Annual vacation (paid leave) will be granted in accordance with the Labor Standard Law of Japan (10 days after six months have passed) in addition to summer holidays (three days) |

Salary: Monthly salary system Salary is determined by IGES regulations, taking into consideration the employee's occupational history, expertise and experience. |

Allowances: Allowances (overtime, commuting, housing, end-of-term, retirement) will be provided and travel expenses for relocation/return trips will be covered in accordance with the internal rule of IGES. |

Insurance: Insurance (health, employee pension, unemployment and workers’ accident compensation) will be partly covered by IGES. |
