Associate Research Scientist – Climate Program

Description: The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) is seeking an outstanding individual that can develop and apply cutting-edge research to assist in the development of national and regional climate services capabilities. Responsibilities will include development of climate service capabilities through climate research and its application, needs assessments, training, partnership building, and tools development. The successful applicant’s research will contribute to improvement of climate information products, such as through analyses of historical records, monitoring and attribution studies, modeling, and investigations of predictability, the impacts of climate variability, extremes, and climate change on society, and / or through the improvement of communication of climate information and its translation into recommended actions.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a PhD degree in climate or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have a strong track record in climate analysis, monitoring or prediction, and in interfacing with at least one of the following user communities: disasters, food security and agriculture, human health, and water resources. Experience in the use of climate information tools such as the IRI Data Library and the Climate Predictability Tool, plus some familiarity with Fortran, R, or another scientific programming language, are required. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English, including peer-reviewed scientific publications and prior experience in teaching, are essential. An ability to communicate in French and Spanish would be an advantage. Previous experience in working in the Caribbean, Central America, West Africa, and South Asia would be a bonus. The successful candidate will be required to travel, possibly for extended periods.

Appointment: The successful candidate will form part of IRI’s multidisciplinary team of scientists engaged in its mission to enhance society’s capability to understand, anticipate and manage the impacts of climate in order to improve human welfare and the environment, especially in developing countries. The IRI is a catalyst for the creation and provision of science-based outcomes that address climate risk. Our approach is based on collaborative partnerships with local, national, regional, international, public and private institutions facilitating the open exchange of ideas, information, and technology between many disciplines and regions.

The position is a full time 1-year appointment, with the opportunity of renewal contingent on performance and availability of funding.
