The Marine Programme of the UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) is offering a 12 month Fixed term Associate Programme Office role for a social scientist with a strong interest in the ocean. The oceans are a key element of global sustainability and this post is an exciting opportunity to consider the complex social and cultural challenges presented by the conservation and sustainable use of ocean resources. 

 

The role will be varied and include the following:

·         Support the planning and implementation of the social science and citizen behavior change components of UNEP-WCMC’s Healthy Ocean Strategy.

·         Contribute to the development of proposals with a social science component aligned with the Healthy Ocean Strategy.

·         Contribute to written, online and visual outputs with a social science component.

·         Support and promote high quality marine social science by contributing research and analysis to projects as appropriate.

·         Support the technical delivery and reporting associated with existing and new projects with a social science component.

·         On behalf of UNEP-WCMC attend, relevant scientific conferences, technical workshops and other specialist meetings both in the UK and overseas.

This role will involve international networking and collaboration within an engaging team environment. The programme, with its experienced, ambitious and results-oriented staff, provides an excellent environment to develop and contribute to your own skills.

We are looking for a conscientious and motivated social scientist.  The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of social science within an ocean context and a flexible skill base to enable contributions to a variety of projects. Ideally you will have a social science focused undergraduate degree (and possibly postgraduate degree) and some relevant experience in the application of social science methods in an ocean-related context.  We will provide you with the chance to strengthen your awareness and understanding of the international ocean policy arena and further develop your analytical and project management skills.
