Position Summary

This position directs, manages and implements marketing activities for states on the East Coast.  This position is also responsible for regional and national earned media with media outlets located on the East Coast.

Essential Functions 

1. Develop and execute marketing activities for assigned state offices (67%)

  • Develop and execute marketing plans and programs to support the national and local marketing objectives of the organization in assigned states.  Support all states in TPL’s Southern Division, and work with Director of Marketing Services to support States in the Northern Division.  Advise State Directors on marketing objectives and strategies.  Support Philanthropy’s efforts to raise funds.  Manage the local execution of national marketing campaigns such as the Cox Conserves Heroes program.
  • Manage the production of state-focused brochures and publications, produce content needed for the website and e-newsletters, and provide ideas and contribute content to TPL’s national publications such as Land&People.
  • Identify public speaking opportunities for TPL staff and guide the preparation of presentations for staff.  Promote TPL at conferences, workshops and seminars. 

 2. Seek regional and national earned media with media outlets located on the east coast (33%)

  • Direct, manage and implement earned media relations, cultivating relationships with reporters, writing press releases and other outreach materials, acting as spokesperson and preparing other TPL spokespersons for interviews, managing media events and other communications activities.  Coordinate media efforts with project partners, including other nonprofits, federal, state and local authorities.
  • Cultivate positive working relationships with writers, media influentials and key policy and decision makers.  Handle timely and coordinated responses to press inquiries and breaking news events.  Plan and implement crisis management strategies as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism or strongly related field.  Masters Degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience managing marketing/public affairs/media campaigns
  • Proven marketing skills, with knowledge of donor development, understanding what constitutes a persuasive case to the public, and the ability to present and make the case directly.
  • Excellent client relationship and project management skills.
  • Established professional relationships with media, and demonstrable success placing stories and serving as media spokesperson.
  • Ability to develop marketing plans and comprehensive strategies
  • Knowledge of and ability to plan and guide promotion activities including print, online, electronic media and direct mail.       
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including writing, editing and public speaking.
