Description

General position overview: The Center for Biological Diversity seeks an experienced and dynamic associate editor for The Revelator, our online news and ideas publication. We're looking for a seasoned journalist ready to build and expand this groundbreaking operation and help make The Revelator a hub for national conversations about the most important environmental issues of our age.

The associate editor will play a crucial role in all aspects of The Revelator, including:

  • Reporting and writing regular news and features about wildlife, politics, people, climate, public lands, pollution, environmental justice, sustainability, oceans, clean water and the future of the planet;
  • Investigative journalism that focuses on accountability; deep analysis; under-reported harms to wildlife and people; political and corporate wrongdoing; and the often-unseen forces that drive species extinct, ruin water and air, and put people and pristine places in harm's way;
  • Editing, soliciting and curating essays and op-eds that illuminate, excite, provoke and inspire;
  • Promoting The Revelator's content and ideas, including via social media, email and through reprints in other publications;
  • Regular posting, photo research and other administrative tasks related to the website;
  • Helping to strategize, develop and execute our long-term vision to create a publication that's smart, savvy, informative, fascinating and influential.

This position reports to The Revelator's editor and to the Communications Director and works with other staff.

Requirements:

  • Proven track record as a working journalist producing exemplary, insightful stories about environmental issues;
  • Exceptional writing and editing;
  • Ability to produce clear, concise and powerful writing on tight deadlines;
  • Seasoned news judgment and solid understanding of the politics and science of major environmental issues;
  • A knack for finding creative, incisive narratives that allows our journalism to rise above the pack and provide readers with stories and context they won't find anywhere else;
  • The ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and juggle multiple projects and multiple deadlines;
  • Ability to research, synthesize and translate complex scientific concepts for a lay audience;
  • Adherence to high journalistic standards and practices;
  • A confident self-starter who also works well in a collaborative team environment;
  • An unapologetic love of the wild.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree;
  • Five to 10 years of experience as a professional journalist and a track record of producing groundbreaking environmental stories;
  • Experience with WordPress or similar platforms;
  • High capability with multiple journalistic platforms, including the web, social media, photography, video and podcasts.

Application process: To apply, please submit a thoughtful cover letter, resume and writing samples.

The position will remain open until filled. The desired start date is as soon as possible. Only applicants selected for interviews will be contacted. No telephone calls, please.
