In collaboration with the West Division Director of Philanthropy, the Hawai'i Associate Director of Philanthropy (Hawai'i ADoP) is responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of a comprehensive philanthropy program within the Hawaiian Islands that secures significant financial resources from individuals to support The Trust for Public Land’s conservation goals.

The primary focus is on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift and high mid-level prospects, including annual, pledged and planned gifts.  Responsibilities include prospect identification, prospect tracking, cultivation and solicitation procedures, direct solicitations, closing gifts, proposal writing and development, and major donor gift recognition.  This position spends about half its time meeting with donors and prospects across the Hawaiian Islands. 

This position reports to the West Division Director of Philanthropy and is responsible for all designated donors, related programmatic or project campaigns and activities, and collaborating with the Hawai'i State Director on the Hawai'i Advisory Board and other volunteers.  This position is focused on managing relationships with donors in Hawai'i who can support local and statewide efforts, and coordinates the state’s efforts as part of TPL's special multi-year fundraising campaign.

Works with West Division Director of Philanthropy to establish fundraising goals to support an annual state program budget of $746K and is accountable for these goals. Focuses on long-range strategic priorities, advances TPL's philanthropy goals, and communicates a broad vision to others.

Essential Functions

  • 75%  Major Donor Program: identifies potential individual, foundation, and corporate donors; develops cultivation and solicitation plans, implements and maintains donor tracking system, makes direct solicitations, closes gifts, writes and develops proposals and case statements, and coordinates and implements major donor recognition.  This position also advises the West Division Philanthropy Director and State Director on overall fundraising goals, objectives and strategy. Works closely with these leaders to aid understanding of states' fundraising goals, progress and implications for current and future fiscal year funding of conservation programs.
  • 15%In coordination with the State Director, manages the philanthropy activities of the local Advisory Board. Ensures that all Board members are proactive ambassadors for TPL. Works with State Director to organize and facilitate portions of Board meetings focused board nominations and philanthropy, donor events, and donor cultivation meetings. Manages Board giving program to meet the goal of 100% Board member participation annually and to ensure that all Board members are giving at the Conservation Champions level.
  • 5% With Director of Planned Giving: identifies potential planned gift donors, develops cultivation and solicitation procedures, implements and maintains planned gift tracking system, makes direct solicitations, writes and develops proposals and coordinates and implements planned giving recognition.
  •  5% Other duties as assigned

 Expectations

  • Manages donor portfolio of up to125 prospects and donors
  • Conducts 12 donor visits per month, or 120 per year
  • Works with the West Division Director of Philanthropy to set a realistic yet aspirational annual giving targets
  • Maintains an active schedule of solicitations, cultivation visits, field trips, events, and stewardship activities
  • Closes gifts
  • Coordinates the nature and number of contacts that assigned prospects receive
  • Develops long-range plans for donor involvement
  • Maintains an active, current body of knowledge pertaining to a growing constituency of current and prospective donors and board members
  • Identifies new prospective donors
  • Facilitates relationships between potential and current donors and members of the TPL's staff and board members
  • Involves and informs staff as solicitation and cultivation activities warrant
  • Engages in best practices (i.e., creating written solicitation strategies, documenting actions and information through the efficient use of TPL's development database, participating in prospect reviews, sharing pertinent information with volunteers, using appreciative inquiry)
  • Ensures close coordination and integration with other key staff
  • Trains and mentors other philanthropy staff and volunteers in fundraising practices and techniques
  • Understands and complies with all TPL gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of development experience
  • Major gifts fundraising experience required
    • Experience in asking for and closing major gifts required
    • Demonstrated initiative and achievement in major gift fundraising
    • Ability to strategize mid-level and large gift solicitations
    • Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors
    • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations
    • Successful experience in asking for and closing major gifts of $50,000 or more preferred
  •  General Development Principles Knowledge:
    • Experience with best practices including the efficient use of database systems, including prospect tracking, a willingness to strengthen strategies through prospect review and an openness to share development techniques while learning TPL's system of best practices
    • Experience, course work, or other training in current trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of major gifts and solicitation. Working knowledge or ability to learn basics of charitable gift planning.
  •  Planning and Organizational Skills:
    • Willingness to accept initiative liaison and special project assignments, and the ability to represent all of TPL's gift opportunities and their priorities to prospects effectively and equitably
    • Flexibility is required as priorities and circumstances dictate
  •  Communication, Teamwork, and Management Skills:
    • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills along with effective interpersonal and organizational abilities
    • Exceptional ability to organize and motivate others, including TPL administration, staff, peers, and volunteers. Including experience training and mentoring other development staff and volunteers in fundraising practices and techniques
    • The ability to function effectively as a member of a team, and a willingness to participate in activities and assignments that will benefit other members of the team or will contribute to the accomplishment of team objectives
  • Interest in and commitment to TPL's Mission.
  • Knowledge of relevant funders desirable.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Willingness to travel about 25% of the time, sometimes on short notice.

 Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of Hawai'i and Hawaiian land, culture, and conservation issues.
