JOB SUMMARY: The Associate Director of Membership is responsible for the management of the River Guardian Society – a group of individuals who support the work of American Rivers with annual gifts of $1,000 - $9,999. The Associate Director also assumes responsibility for cultivating and soliciting online donors and prospects at all levels. S/he works closely with the Director of Membership to upgrade qualified members ($15-$999 donors) to River Guardians and with the Senior Vice President of Advancement and Senior Directors on strategies to upgrade River Guardians to major donors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement a plan to cultivate, solicit and steward current members of the River Guardian Society to include solicitations, reports, appeals, mailings, email, phone calls and visits.
  • Develop and implement plan to identify new River Guardians, renew lapsed River Guardians, and engage conservation and other staff in cultivation.
  • Working closely with the Membership Director and Major Gifts Director, implement a strategic moves management plan in order to personally connect with River Guardian donors.
  • Working with the Membership Director, identify, cultivate and solicit a targeted group of current American Rivers’ members to increase their annual support to the River Guardian level.
  • Working closely with the Membership Director and the Marketing and Communications staff, develop and implement a plan to cultivate and solicit online activists and donors, including drafting fundraising appeals and acknowledgements for this audience.
  • Manage efforts to renew and upgrade online donors.
  • Conduct research or supervise research efforts on current and prospective River Guardians to identify new Major Donor prospects and upgrade current River Guardians to Major Donor status.
  • Participate and support Major Donor and institutional events as assigned.
  • Manage the gift coding and acknowledgement process for River Guardians and online donors.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring the budget for the River Guardian Society.
  • Efficiently utilize database for the tracking and recording of moves pertaining to individual River Guardians and for obtaining information to assist in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of River Guardians.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 3 years of development experience, specifically securing annual donations from individuals.
  • Ability to manage all aspects of online donor cultivation
  • Strategic and creative thinker; highly organized and able to meet deadlines.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of fundraising software, database management and mailing production management.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with outside vendors as well as staff at all levels, board, and donors. 
  • Familiarity with environmental/conservation funding community is a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
