Description

Job Title: Associate Director, International Climate Campaign, Manager

Department: Conservation

Reports To: Senior Director of Federal & International Climate Campaign

Supervises: Associate Campaign Rep, International Campaign

Context: Plans, directs and manages all aspects, including financial and strategic, of the International Coal and Clean Energy Access Program, a component of the International Climate Campaign. Develops and determines strategies and priorities.

Scope: The Associate Director has overall program management and staff management responsibility, and provides experienced leadership and strategic planning for the International Coal and Clean Energy Access Program. Manages and monitors expenses, assigns priorities and timetables, plans and develops strategies, evaluates campaign/program effectiveness. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media and other organizations.

Program supervision responsibility includes developing/managing campaign activities, developing fundraising proposals, raising funds, and overseeing program budget. Acts as a senior advisor to staff colleagues and volunteers. Acts as a senior lobbyist with government officials.

Job Activities:

  1. Serves as supervisor of employees assigned to the program.  These activities include program implementation oversight, performance evaluation, and hiring.
  2. Directs International Coal and Clean Energy Access Program. Works with national staff and volunteers to develop the program/campaign plan, oversee implementation of the plan, coordinate fundraising efforts, and oversee program budget/expenses.
  3. Directs media outreach activities related to the campaign/program, including developing media outreach plans, serving as Sierra Club spokesperson to national media outlets, and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  4. Directs the development and preparation of campaign issues information. This may include the writing, editing and distribution of fact sheets, newsletters, political and educational materials. It may also include the writing, editing and reviewing of articles for conservation-related publications.
  5. Works to develop and insure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.
  6. Plans and develops projects for grant funding, handles personal contacts, solicitation and on-going relationships with specific foundations involved with the projects.
  7. In cooperation with Advancement fundraising staff, participates in major donor personal solicitation and cultivation, and foundation solicitation and relations.
  8. Represents the Sierra Club to the general public.
  9. Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to staff and volunteers.
  10. Provides conservation training and motivation to volunteers.
  11. Lobbies members of Congress and other national officials on behalf of the Club on issues relevant to the assigned program area. Develops relationships with elected public officials and their staffs. Oversees development and implementation of lobby campaigns associated with the assigned national program.
  12. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.
  13. Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

-- B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, or a closely related field.

-- 3-5 years experience as a Washington D.C. representative, or in a comparable position in another organization which includes substantial experience planning and managing a national level legislative campaign, including strategy, organizing, lobbying, media, fundraising, program/employee management, budget planning and management, and work with senior level political leaders.

-- Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.

-- Substantial experience in the strategic planning and direction of legislative campaigns and programs.

-- Expert knowledge with the specific program field.

-- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.

-- 3-5 years prior experience in fundraising that includes foundation relations, individual solicitation of major gifts, and grant-funded project development and oversight.  Demonstrated effectiveness as a major gift fundraiser.

-- Substantial experience, demonstrated skill and ability, in national media relations. Includes effective television and radio presence, knowledge of media technologies including video, radio and print production processes.

-- Expert lobbying ability.

-- Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.

-- 20% travel may be required, as well as occasional evening and/or weekend work.
