Job Title: Associate Director, Entertainment Industry Outreach

Department: Communications

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Reports To: Deputy Communications Director

Context:

Builds relationships in the entertainment community that heighten the Sierra Club’s visibility and increases name recognition with the goal of enhancing the Sierra Club’s profile nationwide, particularly in regard to our Beyond Coal campaign and efforts to promote clean energy. Develops and implements strategies for the Communications department to recruit celebrities and coordinate their efforts to promote and generate greater visibility for Sierra Club’s conservation and media campaigns, public service campaigns, branding efforts, and fundraising efforts. Represents the Sierra Club at various entertainment industry events.

Scope:

The Associate Director, Entertainment Industry Outreach works at a senior level with the Communications Director, Deputy Communications Director, Director of Sierra Club Productions, Senior & Associate Advancement Directors and across all Sierra Club departments to identify and/or create campaigns that benefit from celebrity involvement and increase the Sierra’s Club profile, reach, and influence. Recruits celebrities to serve as Sierra Club spokespeople and to appear in Sierra Club publications, advertisements, public service campaigns, and at Sierra Club media and donor events. Fields internal Club requests for celebrity involvement and coordinates celebrity scheduling, appearances, and efforts on behalf of the Sierra Club.

Job Activities:

  1. Identifies and recruits appropriate celebrities for engagement in Sierra Club activities.
  2. Maintains and builds relationships with agents, talent managers, and publicists in the entertainment industry. Works with allied organizations such as the Environmental Media Association to identify celebrity and promotional opportunities.
  3. Manages and coordinates with National Media Team all celebrity campaign efforts, including securing celebrity appearances (in Sierra Club videos, Sierra Club Radio, print and online Public Service Campaigns), coordinating celebrity signed e-mails, letters to the editors, and working with the Club’s Publicist to secure media appearances and interviews.
  4. Advises Conservation and Communications departments on opportunities, changing trends, practices, and strategies for celebrity campaigns.
  5. Develops and implements strategies to maximize exposure for all celebrity driven content. Works with Communications Director, Deputy Communications Director, and Sierra Club Publicist to establish relationships with major media outlets from across the country.
  6. Coordinates and designs Sierra Club events that reach out to entertainment industry and community. Staffs Sierra Club executives at entertainment industry events.
  7. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bachelors degree in communications, journalism, or a closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years prior experience recruiting and working with celebrities.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advertising, public relations, and marketing campaigns.
  • Ability to interact cooperatively effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure.
