Description

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Associate Director to lead our Climate Change and Environment work.

techUK Overview

techUK is the trade association which brings together people, companies and organisations to realise the positive outcomes of what digital technology can achieve. With over 800 members (the majority of which are SMEs) across the UK, techUK creates a network for innovation and collaboration across business, government and stakeholders to provide a better future for people, society, the economy and the planet. By providing expertise and insight, we support our members, partners and stakeholders as they prepare the UK for what comes next in a constantly changing world.

Role Purpose

techUK’s Associate Director for Climate, Environment and Sustainability is responsible for techUK’s strategic response to climate and environmental challenges.

The team covers one of the most innovative and fast-moving policy areas in the UK and internationally. It focuses not only on the sustainability impacts of the tech sector itself, but the ability of digital technology in supporting the net zero transition of other sectors.

This means working to both respond to the needs of members – briefing and advising them of policy changes and market developments - and the demands of UK government and its agencies, to help them design, deliver and evaluate policies in areas such as net zero, energy efficiency, sustainable chemistry, circular economy, and resource management.

It also requires engagement with adjacent sectors, supply chain actors, government, and its agencies, to support the integration of digital solutions in sector’s net zero transitions, with a particular focus on energy, mobility, cities and in using digital twins.

You will be a focal point for sustainability for all techUK’s 20 programmes to help ensure we are consistent with our messaging on climate, and to ensure we deliver content with integrity and rigor.

In addition, you’ll be managing techUK’s work on wider business responsibility issues, such as responsible sourcing, modern slavery and ESG reporting, product safety, among other topics.

The role will require you to deliver against a range of financial and performance targets (including membership growth and retention, income management and the management and development of a team of talented professionals) and to manage a complex workload with competing demands.

Key responsibilities

  • Coordinate techUK’s work on climate change and sustainability issues, working across programmes and functions to ensure a high level of integrity, consistency, and rigor.
  • Be accountable for the development and delivery of a strategically aligned annual plan that reflects the priorities and needs of members.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with members, industry partners, civil society, government, media and think tanks.
  • Monitor, evaluate and respond to climate and environmental policy developments that impact the business practices and policies of our membership, working with members and leveraging cross sectoral partnerships to grow the influence and reach of techUK.
  • Oversee the publication of reports, thought leadership, newsletters and briefings and the organisation of a series of events and activities in support of the annual plan.
  • Contribute to raising the profile of our expertise with key influencers and represent techUK externally on government forums, in industry groups, and on the external stage in conferences, events and with the media.
  • Develop, coach, provide leadership and support junior staff so they can reach their full potential.

Competencies

  1. A self-motivated individual who is comfortable leading several projects
  2. An effective and motivational manager
  3. A team player who is comfortable and able to work with relevant teams across techUK
  4. Strong interpersonal skills
  5. A networker, with an understanding of how to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of people and organisations
  6. A can-do approach and comfortable working in a high pressure, fast paced environment with competing demands
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to get to grips with complex technical information and communicate this effectively to a range of audiences
  8. Able to articulate, explain and sell the benefits of techUK to a range of audiences from government to potential new members

Person Specification

Essential Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of sustainability policy, the environmental challenges faced by the tech sector, and the ability to use digital technologies to also support sustainable outcomes
  • Strong knowledge of public affairs and can demonstrate successful public policy outcomes through the adoption of public affairs strategies
  • Has a proven track record and experience of managing complex relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Comfortable with and has experience of working with board level executives

Desired Knowledge and Experience

  • Interest in digital transformation/technology/public policy
  • Strong interest in the UK tech sector and our mission to make the UK good for tech, make tech good for the UK and make tech good for people and the planet
  • Has a proven track record of managing events (dinners, breakfast briefings, seminars and so on) ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.

The role reports into the Director of Markets and has overall responsibility for four members of staff. This role profile is a guide to the work that is required but does not form part of any contract of employment and may change from time to time to reflect changing circumstances.
