Earthjustice is the first and largest nonprofit environmental law firm in the world. Founded in 1971, we annually represent nearly 400 other non-profit organizations for free in more than 250 cases that promote a clean energy future, preserve our natural heritage and safeguard our health. Through big-impact litigation, policy advocacy and communications, we ensure that those who jeopardize the health of the planet are held accountable to the law.

We are seeking an associate attorney to join our coal program staff in New York or Philadelphia. The attorney selected for this position will focus on litigation and other advocacy to reduce dependence on coal-fired power and to promote clean energy in its stead.

Responsibilities: The associate attorney may have primary responsibility for some matters, but will generally work collaboratively with other lawyers on the coal team.

  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on issues relating to ongoing or potential litigation projects.
  • Draft motions, briefs and other pleadings.
  • Prepare comments on proposed agency actions and environmental impact statements.
  • Develop oral advocacy and presentation skills.
  • Assist with discovery.
  • Interact with clients and work with experts.
  • Participate in communications strategies around litigation campaigns.

Qualifications: Applicants must be law school graduates, who are admitted or willing to apply for admission to the New York bar (or the Pennsylvania bar if located in Philadelphia). The ideal applicant will have:

  • 1-5 years of experience (including a clerkship) in environmental law or general litigation.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • A solid academic record.
  • Initiative, good judgment, and a strong work ethic.
  • A passion for the environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.

The associate program is designed to help young attorneys develop into thoughtful, professional, and effective advocates skilled in the various aspects of public interest litigation. Many associates have gone on to other positions within Earthjustice or with other conservation organizations. The term for this position is two to three years.

Application Procedure: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the position is open immediately. Please send a cover letter, resume, writing sample, law school transcript, and names and contact information of three references by e-mail to:neoffice_jobs@earthjustice.org. Subject line should read: Coal Associate Attorney Application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. No telephone calls.
