Job Title: Associate Analyst, Beyond Coal Campaign-Washington, DC or TBD

Reports to: Director, Research and Evaluation
Context: Manages CARBON database, and related data sets (planned retirements, new coal, etc.) to meet the needs of the Club’s Beyond Coal campaign. Provides technical support and analysis on issues relating to campaign performance and external factors affecting campaign as directed.
Scope: The Beyond Coal Associate Analyst works with Beyond Coal campaign staff and Legal program to effectively maintain and utilize the CARBON database Accountable to Director, Research and Evaluation, for fulfillment of campaign data information needs. Manages a variety of public and proprietary data in support of Beyond Coal campaign. Trains and supports staff and outside counsel and experts authorized to use the databases. Ensures compliance with applicable Club information policies by all system users. Associate Analyst maintains set of performance management tool as directed by Campaign Analyst M &E, and provides analytical support to research and evaluation team as needed.
Job Activities:
- Manages a variety of public and proprietary data in support of Beyond Coal campaign.
- Under direction of Campaign Analysts provides research, analysis and other technical support for Beyond Coal campaign.
- Maintains campaign performance management data as related to Plant retirements and New Coal including verification of source documentation and updates to internal systems.
- Maintains Beyond Coal web portal, ensuring a virtual library of reference materials and tools for staff and volunteers.
- Researches and develops materials to enable Sierra Club staff and volunteers to effectively work with their local and state officials in meeting campaign goals.
- With regard to CARBON performs data entry and discrepancy management in SQL database; performs data cleansing; manages relationship with developer; produces accurate and timely reports as needed; coordinates with other Club Departments to ensure consistent data usage; responds to requests for data from campaign staff, legal program, and communications staff; manages CARBON Listserv and communication with users; performs annual update; manages CARBON inbox - responds to questions and access requests.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science, statistics, economics and/or finance, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree preferred.
- 2-3 years demonstrated experience managing information systems and/or large data sets, including responsibility for the specification of system applications to meet business/operational needs.
- Excellent quantitative, analytical, and research skills.
- Advanced computer skills, including Excel. Comfort with Access, SQL or other database.
- Knowledge and background of energy sector with understanding of energy sector data (EIA, EPA, AWEA, etc.)
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, time management skills, and initiative.
- Flexibility and ability to work on several assignments simultaneously.
- Able to work independently as well as be part of a team.
- Detail oriented, precise and able to detect subtle inconsistencies in data.
This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
