Job Title: Associate Advancement Director, Midwest Region

Department: Office of Advancement

Reports To: Senior Advancement Director

Supervises: Part-time Administrative Assistant

Context: Plans and implements all aspects of the Sierra Club's major gift fundraising within the assigned geographic region.

Scope: The Associate Advancement Director is responsible for the development of gift support, within the assigned region, to the mission and programs of the Sierra Club. Directs fundraising and procurement of gifts of $10,000 and greater, with the goal of increasing net program revenues from donors within a defined region. Particular emphasis on soliciting gifts of $100,000 and greater in the context of the Sierra Club's Climate Recovery Partnership. Coordinates and involves Sierra Club Conservation staff, field staff, regional and Chapter leaders, and activists in the major gift fundraising process as necessary to achieve financial results. Develops and enhances all necessary major gift fundraising staff and volunteer relationships. Performs special project assignments to enhance the collective team success of major gift fundraising for the Sierra Club.

Job Activities:

1. Plans and organizes donor identification strategies. Works closely with volunteers and key staff to identify prospects and develop strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of private philanthropic support

2. Makes solicitation/cultivation calls on donors and prospective donors.

3. Maintains particular emphasis on building relationships with funders having single gift capacity of $100,000 or greater.

4. Recruits and trains volunteers for the solicitation of major gifts. Coordinates all volunteer major gift fundraising activities within the region.

5. Plans and oversees regional donor events and staffs Advancement committee meetings as necessary.

6. Coordinates major gift fundraising activities with the work of the Featured Objective Team Leaders, Regional Field offices including Chapter staff, regional Conservation staff, Chapter leadership and committee chairs.

7. Facilitates the participation of Conservation staff and activist leadership in prospect identification, cultivation, and solicitation, and provides assistance to Conservation planning activities that are major gift fundraising related.

8. Develops and implements a Regional Fundraising Plan, monitors fundraising efforts, sets priorities for future activities, and regularly reports progress to Chief Advancement Officer and relevant volunteer leadership.

9. Maintains knowledge and expertise in environmental issues, the Sierra Club's priorities and concerns. Helps to identify and develop funding opportunities.

10. Plans, monitors, and updates the budget of the Regional Plan. Evaluates and coordinates resources needed to carry out the Regional Plan.

11. Works with the other Advancement senior staff, Conservation & Media, and other Sierra Club staff to help develop Major Gift programs, initiatives, general events, and materials.

12. Provides guidance to direct reports by assigning work and establishing work priorities. Conducts performance appraisals. Makes salary, hiring, and termination recommendations. Ensures development and training of staff.

13. Performs miscellaneous duties and specially assigned project duties as directed.

Knowledge and Skills:

-- 3+ years of experience in development and major gift fundraising, including a strong background in personal solicitation of five and six figure gifts and use of volunteers in fundraising efforts.

-- Demonstrated effectiveness and ability to meet personal solicitation fundraising goals. Demonstrated interpersonal skills. Experience with major gift fund-raising in context of a capital campaign is highly desirable.

-- Proven record of effective work with volunteers: organization, training, motivation, and coordination.

-- Strong public speaking and communication skills.

-- Knowledge and experience with environmental issues.

-- Valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.

-- 40% travel required.
