Ideal candidates will have broad, interdisciplinary interests that include the sedimentary coastal system, complementing existing areas of expertise within the group, which include coastal geomorphology, sedimentology, geophysics, paleoclimatology, and numerical modeling of coastal evolution. This addition will continue the growth of our Coastal Systems Group which has a wide range of equipment to facilitate marine and terrestrial research in the coastal zone. This equipment includes an XRF core scanner, sedimentology lab, marine and terrestrial vibracoring systems, a Geoprobe coring rig, chirp seismics, a marine electromagnetic system, and ground penetrating radar.

Successful candidates will be expected to develop and maintain their own independent externally funded research program.

Opportunities exist for teaching and advising graduate students through the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering, as well as for collaborating with scientists and engineers elsewhere in the institution; the Departments of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, Biology, Physical Oceanography, Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering, and the Marine Policy Center.

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to ability to lift up to 50lbs, visual requirements to include depth perception, ability to see peripherally, ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus, ability to distinguish basic colors. This position includes occasional prolonged standing/walking, manual dexterity and mobility and occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching.

EDUCATION DESIRED:
A Ph.D. is required at the time of the appointment as well as a demonstrated record of excellence in research.
