The Environmental Analysis Facility (EAF) of DRI’s Division of Atmospheric Sciences has an opening for a scientist in the area of ambient and source characterization. We are seeking a person with the interdisciplinary interest needed to contribute to the further development and use of continuous gas and particle instruments (including PM mass, mass surrogates, particle size distribution, and black carbon) to conduct field studies and laboratory characterization of combustion aerosols. A strong background in physics (especially aerosol physics), mechanical/thermal engineering, atmospheric science, and instrument design is required. This position will be located in Reno, Nevada.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and testing of real-time monitoring techniques and instruments and their use in field studies; will be expected to lead or substantially participate in writing proposals for continued sponsorship, to develop their own research programs over time, and meet the requirements for advancement through DRI’s professorial ranks.

As the environmental research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), Desert Research Institute (DRI) conducts cutting-edge research in air, land, life, and water across Nevada, the nation, and world. With more than 500 employees and two main campuses in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada, DRI generates nearly $55 million in total annual revenue. As part of a non-teaching, research- and product-driven organization, DRI’s faculty members are entrepreneurial, and responsible for their own salaries from external grants and contracts. This blend of academic rigor and pragmatism has earned DRI a reputation for delivering rapid, high quality environmental science in a professional fashion.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Strong background in design, fabrication, and application of gas- and particle-sampling systems for ambient and/or process gas streams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively within an interdisciplinary team involving instrument/software integration and theory.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in two or more of the following: aerosol physics, air quality field studies, instrument development, interactions between particles and electromagnetic radiation, and nanoparticle generation and measurement.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • A record of peer-reviewed journal articles and presentations at professional meetings appropriate for the candidate’s professional rank.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • A record of instrument design and testing or other demonstrated ability to obtain and complete research grants and contracts appropriate for the candidate’s professional rank.
  • Proven ability to work with others and manage and direct research projects.
  • Experience in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for laboratory and field operations.

SALARY / BENEFITS

Starting salary is commensurate with experience and education. DRI provides an exceptional benefits package.
