Background: The purpose of the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project (CBLCP) is to prevent the extinction of the Golden-headed or Cat Ba langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus poliocephalus), and to contribute to the conservation of the overall biodiversity of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Cat Ba Archipelago. The species is endemic to Cat Ba Island in Northern Vietnam, and listed by IUCN as critically endangered and one of the world's 25 most endangered primate species. The project was established by Münster Zoo in cooperation with the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP) in 2000 and continues to develop its programs within the island community as the only conservation organization currently working on Cat Ba. We are now seeking a well-rounded candidate with a variety of skills and of the highest integrity to join our small team.
General Job Description: Together with the Project Manager the Assistant Project Manager will be heavily involved in overseeing and assisting with all aspects of this small but dynamic conservation project. Project programs include active community forest protection groups, specialized langur guards, capacity building for Cat Ba National Park rangers and staff, school education programs, as well as langur monitoring. The project functions as the de facto advisor on nearly all environmental, conservation and wildlife issues on the island.
Major Responsibilities: - Supervision of office and staff of Vietnamese nationals - Accounting & budgeting - Supervision of in-school education program - Public presentations - Report writing - Public relations and marketing - Attending meetings/ workshops/ local conferences - Fundraising & grant writing support
Other Responsibilities to include: - Assistance with langur guards and community forest protection groups - Assistance with field work/patrols - Assistance with National Park capacity building programs
Core Qualifications: - Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, Master’s degree strongly preferred - Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills - Strong commitment to environmental conservation - 3-5 years international conservation project experience (preferably inSoutheast Asia) - Supervisory experience - Excellent interpersonal communication and diplomatic skills - Excellent writing skills - Fluent in English
Other important Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - Good knowledge in GIS/ mapping software and radio telemetry - Leadership skills - Independent self-starter who can meet deadlines with little supervision - Good common sense and problem solving skills - Flexible and patient - Detail oriented, organized and reliable - Good sense of humour - Cultural adaptability and sensitivity - Energetic and dynamic - Punctual and mature
This is primarily an administrative position with only occasional trips to the field
Other Information: For many years, the CBLCP has been cooperating successfully with numerous Vietnamese governmental organizations as well as local and international NGOs; therefore, an outgoing and diplomatic personality is a must. The successful candidate should be able to cope with isolated and spartan living conditions with few amenities. Food is simple as are the accommodations within Cat Ba National Park (private room with bath/ hot water/ wireless internet). Field work can be very strenuous so the candidate should be in good physical condition.
