UNEP-WCMC’s Marine Programme works to facilitate the integration of biodiversity considerations into national and international marine policy and practice. To achieve this, we focus on developing, maintaining and publishing high quality global marine biodiversity datasets which are used to underpin effective marine policy.  We also seek to improve the process of marine policy-making and decision-processes through testing new approaches, sharing effective practices, and capacity building. Our work delivers improvements to coastal and marine biodiversity and benefits to the people and communities who depend upon our coasts and seas.

We are now looking for a highly motivated and conscientious Assistant Programme Officer to work in the Marine Programme to: 1) provide technical support to a range of projects and activities across the Programme and within UNEP-WCMC; and 2) to support project proposal development within the Programme and the Centre.  Key areas of responsibility of the post are: 1) to provide technical support to a range of projects and activities within the Programme; and 2) to support opportunities for project development and formulation.  Key duties will be to support the technical delivery, reporting and ministration associated with existing projects with the Programme primarily related to marine digital products and to actively engage in the development of new project opportunities, including collaboration with key partners.

The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of marine biodiversity matters and a skill base focused on spatial marine ecology, GIS and the development of marine digital products.  They will hold a degree in applied marine science, spatial ecology, biogeography, marine ecology or a related field, with demonstrated applied knowledge relevant to marine biodiversity.  They will need to be flexible and adaptable to variable demands and be willing to learn new skills and processes.

Excellent technical skills in marine spatial ecology, GIS and spatial analysis are needed as are excellent skills in background research, technical writing and data visualization as well as proposal writing experience and abilities are necessary as is demonstrated strong project and budgetary management skills. There will be the need to foster, maintain and support international partnerships and networks and to have excellent communication skills, including presentation and facilitation skills.
