Description

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

Within the IceSheets programme at BAS a particular focus of current research is on understanding past changes of the Antarctic Ice Sheets during the late Quaternary.

There is a short-term vacancy in the Palaeo-Ice Sheets project for a science student to help us with this work for 21 weeks (ideally 05/11/2012-29/03/2013). You will assist marine geologists and work on marine and sub-ice-shelf sediment cores from the Antarctic continental margin and the Southern Ocean. The objectives of the Palaeo-Ice Sheets project are to search for evidence for a collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet during the Pleistocene, to determine the extent of the Antarctic Ice Sheet during the last glacial maximum and reconstruct its retreat and thinning history, and to investigate dynamic changes of Antarctic Peninsula ice shelves during the Holocene. The project also involves marine geophysicists, a terrestrial geomorphologist/geochronologist, and interaction with glaciologists and glacial modellers.

You will be involved in the splitting and sampling of sediment cores and analyse grain size by sieving, pick calcareous foraminifera under a microscope for isotope measurements, determine the water content of sediments, and sample sediment cores for geochemical and palaeomagnetic investigations. Previous experience of laboratory work on marine or lake sediment cores and microscopic studies on foraminifera is essential.

For further information contact Claus-Dieter Hillenbrand (hilc@bas.ac.uk) or James Smith (jaas@bas.ac.uk).

Qualifications: You must have completed at least one year of a science degree, possess at least one science A level at grade C or above, and have attained a GCSE in mathematics. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an advanced level of working under laboratory conditions. The ability to work supportively and constructively in a closely-knit team is an essential requirement.

Duration: 21 weeks fixed term appointment

Salary: Salary will be £ 14,620 per annum pro rata. We offer a generous benefits package including a pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave per annum, pro rata.
