Main purpose and scope of job :
- To contribute and assist in developing environmental policy as it impacts on agriculture and horticulture and so doing protect and further members' interests. 
- To contribute to its influence in Brussels, UK government departments, statutory agencies and non-governmental organisations who are involved in environmental policy formulation and implementation.
- To co-ordinate the work of the Professional Nutrient Management group  commitments to ensure deadlines, milestones and budgets are met and to administer the associated communications plan.
Levels of authority:
- Assist in the development of policies and initiatives with approval of Officeholders, the Policy Board and Commodity Boards and staff in relevant environmental policies.
- When instructed, represent members' interests and concerns in negotiations on the development and implementation of environmental policies.
- Contribute to the provision of information and advice to regional staff and (where appropriate) to members or groups of members on relevant environment policies and practices.
- Contribute to the management of the work of the Professional Nutrient Management group.
Functional responsibilities:
- To assist in the environment team in the monitoring and evaluation of the development and implementation of national and European legislation, policies and practices and assess their implications for farmers and growers.
- As directed, liaise and represent the organisation with government departments, statutory agencies and non-governmental organisations on matters relating to relevant environment policies.
- Establish and maintain a database on farming’s environmental performance. 
- Assist colleagues in Environment Team to further projects that improve farmers’ and partners’ awareness of farming’s environmental impact and performance.
Experience and Qualifications
• HND/Degree (or equivalent)
• An understanding of the farming industry and its associated environmental impacts/agenda
• To be a proficient user of Microsoft packages
• To have a knowledge of press and media
Desirable
• Degree in Environmental Science or related subject
• Demonstrate knowledge of environmental regulations
Relevant Experience
Essential
• Experience of negotiating with stakeholders
• Experience of working with farmers
• Experience of researching, interpreting and communication of regulations and legislation
• Experience of project co-ordination or management
Desirable
• Experience of liaising with Government and non-statutory bodies
• Relevant experience of representing farmers and growers on environmental issues
Communication and Relationship Skills
Essential
• Effective communications written and verbal skills
• Ability to synthesise and communicate more complex information for a non-technical audience
• Comfortable working in a team or independently
• Comfortable working with external partners
• Effective negotiation skills
• Competent at public presentations
Desirable
• Excellent communication skills in written and spoken word
• Experienced and proficient public presenter
• Experience of written media
• Some experience of radio or TV
Personal Circumstances
Essential
• Full current driving licence (consideration will be given under the DDA where applicable)
• Highly motivated and have a passion for environmental issues
• Some evening presentations may be required.
• Must live within 40 miles of the post location or willing to relocate
