Description

Overview

  • Salary: £22,500 pro rata
  • Position: Full time/Temporary (7 month contract)

The opportunity

GE Consulting are looking for a number of Assistant Ecologists to join our teams in Exeter and Bristol for the 2024 survey season. These will be seasonal contracts (Starting on the 25th of March until the end of October) with the possibility for an extension if workloads require and a very real chance of the role becoming permanent (a rolling average of 80% of previous seasonal ecologists have been offered permanent roles at the end of their contract).

This is an opportunity for up-and-coming ecologists to learn a lot of new skills by having the chance to contribute to a wide range of surveys, reporting, QGIS mapping, data analysis and many other consultancy tasks, all with a lot of training and mentoring by a friendly team of experienced ecologists.

The individual

The individuals we are seeking will either be working in the ecological consultancy sector or have the qualifications ready to start such a career. We are seeking bright and enthusiastic individuals who are happy to roll up their sleeves and join in with any task that is presented to them. The role will mostly be focused on field surveys with a heavy emphasis on bat surveys (so lots of weekday evenings out surveying) but should also include the chance to surveys for GCN, dormice, reptiles, otter, badger, birds if you have the skills and of course we will look to help develop your botanical skills.

The company

GE is a mid-sized (30+ staff), privately owned consultancy with an excellent reputation. With our head office in Exeter and an office in Bristol we work for a wide variety of clients across the south of England and into Wales. We are big enough to work on interesting major projects (1000+ unit residential schemes, 1000-acre renewables sites, national utilities contract) yet small enough to feel like you’re part of a close knit team and not a small cog in a huge international organization. We are a company that puts its staff first, creating a fun non- corporate atmosphere where a love of wildlife is shared across a team of like-minded people.

Essential skills and experience

  • A relevant degree to move into the role of a Consultant Ecologist
  • Committed and reliable with strong time management
  • A passion of the natural world and a desire to build a career in this sector
  • High attention to detail
  • Able to work alone or be a team player
  • Happy to work evenings and unsociable hours
  • Full driving license & car

Desirable skills and experience

  • A member of CIEEM
  • QGIS mapping skills
  • Experience of conducting ecology surveys
  • A protected species survey licence
  • Interest and knowledge in plant identification

Benefits

  • A fun and friendly non-corporate working environment
  • Lots of training and mentoring
  • TOIL system where all hours worked are recognised and rewarded
  • Company socials
  • Your birthday off work on top of your standard annual leave
  • Contributory pension scheme

GE Consulting are an equal opportunity employer that recognises the value of a diverse workforce. Full equality & diversity policy available on request.
