Description

We are seeking an assistant ecologist to join our Sussex team, initially on a six-month fixed term contract but with a view to extending this into a permanent position. This is an ideal opportunity for graduates looking to develop a career in ecological consultancy. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to assist with all areas of our work, including:

  • Carrying out ecological surveys and/or supporting senior team members
  • Supervising ecological aspects of site work
  • Collating and reviewing ecological information for desk studies
  • Assisting with the production of reports
  • Carrying out general administrative tasks, including project management and marketing

Candidate specification

Essential:

  • Hold a degree in ecology or a closely related subject
  • Some experience of undertaking protected species surveys, such as those for bats, great crested newts or reptiles
  • Be reliable, flexible, and willing to work unsociable hours
  • Have excellent organisation skills
  • Have good communication skills
  • Be located within an hour’s drive of our Sussex office
  • Have a car and be able to travel to sites throughout the UK

Desirable:

  • Post-graduate degree in ecology or a closely related subject
  • Hold a protected species survey licence
  • Membership of CIEEM
  • Hold a valid CSCS card
  • Knowledge of GIS

What we offer

We will provide comprehensive one-to-one training of standard survey techniques following the relevant good practice guidelines. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work towards gaining one or more protected species licences.

We will also assist the successful candidate in working towards a continuous learning and development (CLAD) plan to help develop their knowledge and skills. This is a requirement of CIEEM and will hopefully be used to inform potential future roles within the company.

Salary will be dependent on the calibre and experience of the candidate, but will be highly competitive. We also offer:
