Position Description: The Sumatran Orangutan Society is dedicated to the conservation of Sumatran orangutans and their forest home. Our international branches raise awareness of the threats facing wild orangutans, and raise funds to support our grassroots conservation projects in Sumatra. Together with a team of committed Indonesian conservationists, we work with local communities living alongside the last remaining orangutan habitat. We visit schools, hold conservation camps, plant trees and provide training to help the local people work towards a more sustainable future for their forests.
The UK headquarters of the SOS, based in Oxford, is looking for a part-time assistant to support many aspects of running the office, including fundraising, campaigns, memberships and merchandise. Tasks may include:
* Managing our merchandise, including the online shop, keeping a stock inventory, developing a catalogue, tracking and processing orders; · Organise regular volunteer meetings and coordinate volunteer activities; · Organising fundraising events and manage SOS stalls at summer festivals; · Processing new memberships and sending out renewal reminders to current members; · Assist with marketing our annual eco-trek to the Sumatran rainforest, and coordinating with other SOS branches to develop tours from other countries; · Compile information for the website and produce resources to support our campaigns e.g. unsustainable palm oil, biofuels, illegal trade; · Help UK Coordinator research potential donors e.g. companies and charitable foundations; · Collecting relevant news articles for our press book and news section of the website; · Contributing to the bi-annual JungleVine newsletter; · Approaching local businesses to carry information, merchandise & collecting tins; · Supervising the office in the absence of the coordinator. Qualifications/Experience: Applicants should have excellent communication and computer skills, and background knowledge of conservation and environmental issues. Salary/funding: The position is offered on a part-time basis for 16-20 hours per week, at £6.00 per hour. Some evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.
