The Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas

www.mba-aom.ca) has an immediate opening for the position of Assistant Coordinator. The Maritimes Atlas is a five-year project to determine the distribution, abundance and status of all birds breeding in the Maritime provinces. 2010 the final year of data collection and the transition to the data analysis and publication phase of the project. The Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas Assistant Coordinator is a term position with Bird Studies Canada - Atlantic Region from April 1 2010 to December 31 2011 (or longer as needed), subject to a six-month provisional period during which the assistant must demonstrate good performance. The Assistant Coordinator reports to the Atlas Coordinator on behalf of the Atlas Steering Committee. The Assistant Coordinator's primary responsibilities relate to various aspects of book production (including fact checking, reviewing written materials, proof-reading written materials, assisting in the management and coordination of authors, editors and reviewers and potentially writing some species accounts), data verification and review, as well as volunteer management and communications in the final Atlas field season. The Assistant Coordinator is based at the BSC Atlantic Region Office, co-located with the Canadian Wildlife Service in Sackville, New Brunswick, and may be required to travel within the three Maritime provinces.

SALARY RANGE $34,000 - $40,000 per year, plus legal benefits (EI, CPP and vacation pay).

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION The Assistant Coordinator should hold a B.Sc. in biology, ecology or environmental studies, or relevant work experience, and should be legally entitled to work in Canada. A valid driver's license is required.

SKILLS

  • Extremely strong organizational and communication skills (written and oral)
  • Extensive knowledge of Canadian breeding birds
  • Demonstrated research skills and strong attention to detail;
  • Initiative and the ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision;
  • Computer skills (familiarity with website design and MS Office including Word, Excel, Power Point and FrontPage).

ASSETS

  • The ability to communicate in French (written and oral)
  • Skills related to publication including editing, copy-editing, and developing and using templates
  • Database experience and knowledge of SQL Server Enterprise Manager
  • Familiarity with the Maritimes breeding birds and habitats
  • Scientific publications
  • Previous Atlas survey experience and familiarity with Atlas protocols
  • Ability to identify birds by sight and sound
