The forests of Papua New Guinea (PNG) are the third largest, and some of the most diverse, on Earth. They support many cultures - over 12% of the world’s existing languages are spoken there - and a rich diversity of plant and animal species. Devastatingly, this rich diversity of life is being lost at an alarming rate. Over 60% of PNG’s intact forests have already been destroyed by logging and industrial agriculture and the loss continues today.

Greenpeace has been working in PNG since 1995 exposing illegal logging and promoting alternatives to forest destruction. We are calling on the PNG Government to declare a moratorium on industrial logging and forest conversion for large-scale agriculture such as palm oil plantations. We are campaigning for fair and participatory land-use agreements to be developed that allow real and sustainable community development.

We are looking for a passionate Assistant Communications and Media Relations Officer to highlight the threat to PNG’s forests, and the need for protection, during the period leading up to the national elections.

This position will work with the Forest team to assist with message development and audience targeting and implement the campaign communications objectives.  You will also be involved in writing communications materials such as press releases, background briefings, press packs and reports.

The successful applicant will need experience in a media environment, with at least two years’ experience in journalism, daily news or current affairs. An understanding of forest issues in the region and a commitment to the ideals and values of Greenpeace is also required.

As well as the opportunity to make a difference on crucial issues, Greenpeace offers employees a supportive work environment and a real commitment to life/work balance.  We also encourage staff to develop new skills, take on challenges and get involved in the wider organisation.

This is a full-time (35 hours per week) 12 month term position based in Port Moresby.  Applications close 15 May 2012 and must address the selection criteria in the job description.  Interviews are scheduled to take place on 21 May.
