Alaska Wilderness League, headquartered in Washington, DC, has offices in New England, the Midwest, the Southwest, and Alaska. For over 15 years, the League has significantly expanded its programs and staff to address the broad range of wilderness protection issues across Alaska.

The League is seeking a creative and enthusiastic individual to fill a position as our Arctic Refuge Campaign Coordinator. The Coordinator will work closely with the Director of Government Affairs to manage the day-to-day workings of the League’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge protection campaign as well as support the work of the rest of the League’s Arctic campaigns, including protecting key areas of the Western Arctic and Arctic Ocean.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is an irreplaceable, unspoiled wilderness. It is home to a vast array of birds, grizzly bears, musk oxen, polar bears and much more. The Coastal Plain of the Arctic Refuge is the birthing and nursery grounds for the more than 120,000-strong Porcupine Caribou Herd.

Qualifications: B.A./B.S. or higher degree in political science, environmental science or policy, public policy or other related field; 3+ years experience of related advocacy work or on Capitol Hill, or the equivalent; familiarity with federal environmental issues; knowledge of Congress and Administrative agencies; excellent written and oral communication skills and confident public speaker; strong interpersonal skills and experience building and working in coalitions; sense of humor, and ability and desire to work in a team environment all essential.

Position Summary: The Conservation Coordinator will be the chief coordinator and main point of contact for the Arctic Refuge Campaign, will provide substantial legislative support on all Arctic Campaigns, and will provide general support on all other League campaigns as needed. This individual reports to the Government Affairs Director and works on a broad array of tasks across all departments. The Director guides the Coordinator in determining work priorities.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Significant experience and/or knowledge is required in the following areas: preparing strategic campaign plans; national environmental campaigns; legislative, media, and grassroots programs
  • Ability to express ideas articulately
  • Experience in effective public speaking
  • Ability to keep current and manage activities on multiple environmental issues
  • Demonstrated success in participating in strong coalitions and teams
