The Forest Program Manager will work with the Deputy Regional Director and Resource Economist, as well as other Forest staff within the organization, to help represent The Wilderness Society’s interests in the Tongass National Forest. The Manager will help facilitate on-the-ground restoration, monitoring and adaptive management. The Manager will work collaboratively to identify and pursue strategies for conserving and restoring public lands and will be responsible for commenting on NEPA documents that guide forest activities. Success will require collaborative work with other conservation organizations, the Forest Service, local businesses, members of Congress, state and federal agencies, and Tribes.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Deputy Director and Resource Economist to develop and implement a science and policy-based program that results in on the ground ecological restoration, strong stewardship prescriptions by the Forest Service, and new, innovative restoration projects that improve both the ecological health of the forest and community health.
  • Coordinate with a broad coalition of organizations (including other conservation, public interest, and business groups), as well as The Wilderness Society’s forest team and research department, to support public lands protection proposals. Provide leadership on key issues and help lead coalition communications efforts including messaging and general grassroots assistance.
  • Respond to NEPA analyses for proposed forest management activities and plans.
  • Identify opportunities to influence Forest Service policy, then initiate and implement strategies designed to influence those policies.
  • Consistent with The Wilderness Society’s Stewardship and Restoration Program, work closely with other TWS staff and conservation partners to develop a unified approach to land protection and restoration work in the Tongass.
  • Work in collaboration with conservation partners, Forest Service personnel, local communities, Tribes, and other interest groups. Develop strong working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Work alongside TWS communications staff to organize media opportunities/events that message positive benefits of forest restoration and sustainable forest management.
  • Participate in The Wilderness Society's Restoration Initiative to support the development and implementation of public policy recommendations promoting restoration and better forest management across the National Forest system.
  • Assist with proposal writing and other fundraising efforts as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has:

  • A Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years relevant work experience. A Masters degree in natural resource management or policy, or related field, preferred. Education in forestry and forest management is desirable.
  • Professional experience working on public land issues in Alaska.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate a wide range of interests including local citizens and stakeholders, conservation organizations, Tribes, federal, state, and/or local agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse interests in an effective manner.
  • Must be enthusiastic, highly motivated, a self starter, and able to effectively manage multiple demands and deadlines.
  • Must have a broad view of conservation issues and have demonstrated the ability to think and act strategically to achieve conservation goals.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience with and knowledge of National Forest management law and policies.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, ability to write and speak concisely and persuasively, and competent in typing and personal computer skills.
  • Must be comfortable working in and traveling to remote, rural communities.
  • A sense of humor and the ability to have fun while working in a fast-paced environment.

Some travel required, particularly to Southeast Alaska.

We offer a very competitive salary and benefits package, including health and dental insurance and a pension plan.
