Northern Alaska Environmental Center

Our mission is to promote conservation of the environment and sustainable resource stewardship in interior and Arctic Alaska through advocacy and education.  As Alaska's northern-most regional conservation organization, we are committed to protecting Alaska’s great wilderness landscapes like the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, critical habitat areas like Teshekpuk Lake in the Western Arctic and in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas.

Position

The Arctic Program is looking for a volunteer part-time (8-12 hours per week) intern for January–May 2010; University credit with faculty sponsorship. 

Duties

  • Provides digital video editing and final production of DVD copies.
  • Writes web-based updates including web pages, YouTube postings, Facebook and other social networking pages, and videotapes events and interviews to involve Alaskans in Arctic conservation. 
  • Writes fact sheets, powerpoints, and letters to editor on Arctic issues including protecting Arctic Refuge coastal plain as wilderness and supporting renewable energy to reduce global warming pollution.

Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • Strong computer skills; Mac computer video editing skills preferred
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Commitment to environmental protection
  • Preferred background: Rural development, Alaska Native studies, natural resource management, environmental studies, biology, geography, journalism or communications, political science, history, photography or graphics arts
