Greenpeace is seeking an experienced and skilled Community Outreach Organizer for the International Arctic Project to facilitate and develop strong relationships between Greenpeace and communities located in the circumpolar region for the purpose of protecting the Arctic.

Position location: Vancouver, Edmonton, Yukon, Nunavut or NWT
Salary rate: $44,569 per annum, plus an excellent benefits package
Reports to: Climate and Energy Campaign Coordinator

Duration: Contract position until the end of December 2011

Greenpeace Canada is an independently funded, nonprofit organization that works to protect the environment. To maintain independence Greenpeace does not accept donations from corporations or governments.

Greenpeace is seeking an experienced and skilled Community Outreach Organizer for the International Arctic Project to facilitate and develop strong relationships between Greenpeace and communities located in the circumpolar region for the purpose of protecting the Arctic. The successful candidate will work from Canada and will support outreach work around this region. The successful candidate will be part of Greenpeace International’s Arctic campaign team and some travel may be required to work in other Arctic countries. The ability to work evenings and weekends is sometimes required.

Major Responsibilities will include (but are not be limited to):

1. Creating and fostering relationships with leaders and other key community organizations who are involved in future plans for the Arctic.

2. Creating presentations to educate leaders, organizations, and individual about Greenpeace’s role and objectives and gaining support for Greenpeace’s work to protect the Arctic.

3. Sharing information & research on potential impacts of oil exploration in the Arctic.

4. Being an articulate spokesperson for Greenpeace by responding to a wide variety of questions and requests from the general public, community members and media and bringing any issues of concern to Greenpeace’s attention.

5. Providing strategic advice in the development of the outreach program throughout its planning and implementation phase. Representing Greenpeace at community meetings, events and social venues.

6. Recruiting and training volunteers.

Required Skills and Experience:

1. A demonstrated commitment, knowledge and passion for the environment, social justice, land protection, Inuit and First Nations issues;

2. Proven experience working with Indigenous leaders, diverse communities and working in coalitions;

3. Proven experience lobbying governments and/or councils;

4. Ability to relate effectively and work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds including Inuit, First Nations, and environmentalists;

5. Excellent oral communication skills including good public speaking and presentation skills, as well as strong listening abilities;

6. Ability to inspire and motivate volunteers and a passion for interacting with the public;

7. Ability to remain calm and think on your feet in a fast-paced, creative environment;

8. Ability to work independently, establish priorities, and proceed with objectives without supervision, yet participate effectively as part of a team.
