Salary rate: $44,569 per annum, plus an excellent benefits package (including a cost of living allowance)

Greenpeace Canada is an independently funded, nonprofit organization that works to protect the environment. We challenge government and industry to halt harmful practices by negotiating solutions, conducting scientific research, introducing clean alternatives, carrying out peaceful acts of civil disobedience and educating and engaging the public. To maintain independence Greenpeace does not accept donations from corporations or governments.

Greenpeace is seeking an experienced and skilled Community Outreach Campaigner for the International Arctic Project to facilitate and develop strong relationships between Greenpeace and Arctic indigenous leadership for the purpose of protecting the Arctic. The successful candidate will work from Canada and will support outreach work around the Arctic region. The successful candidate will be part of Greenpeace International's Arctic campaign team and some travel may be required to work in other Arctic countries. The ability to work evenings and weekends is sometimes required.

Major responsibilities will include (but are not be limited to):

  1. Create and foster relationships with leaders, political leadership and other key community organizations who are involved in future plans for the Arctic.
  2. Create presentations to share information with leaders, organizations, and individuals about Greenpeace's role and objectives and gain support for Greenpeace's work to protect the Arctic.
  3. Share information and research on potential impacts of oil exploration in the Arctic.
  4. Act as an articulate spokesperson for Greenpeace by responding to a wide variety of questions and requests from the general public, community members and media and bring any issues of concern to Greenpeace's attention.
  5. Provide strategic advice in the development of the outreach program throughout its planning and implementation phase. Represent Greenpeace at community meetings, events and social venues political forums and professional conferences.

Required skills and experience:

  1. A demonstrated commitment, knowledge and passion for the environment, social justice, land protection, Inuit and First Nations issues;
  2. Knowledge and understanding of various local cultures, and the influences of relationships in the Arctic communities;
  3. Proven experience lobbying governments and/or councils;
  4. Ability to relate effectively and work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds including Inuit, First Nations, and environmentalists;
  5. Excellent oral communication skills including good public speaking and presentation skills, as well as strong listening abilities;
  6. Ability to remain calm and think on your feet in a fast-paced, creative environment;
  7. Ability to work independently, establish priorities, and proceed with objectives without supervision, and at the same time effectively participates as part of a team.
