Arctic Campaign Director

SUMMARY

 The Arctic Campaign Director is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the GPUS Arctic Campaign, in pursuit of the goals identified in the Greenpeace’s Global Campaign Strategy.  The Arctic Campaign Director directs and manages the US Arctic Campaign team.  This position reports directly to the Campaigns Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In conjunction with the Campaigns Director, develop strategies for ambitious, high impact, well researched, campaigns that lend themselves to our theory of change – campaigns that use the power of people and have the courage to confront politicians and corporations; ensure that campaign strategies support Greenpeace long-term global campaign goals.
  • Working with the Deputy Campaigns Director, oversee the identification and development of projects falling out of the theory of change, including delegation to project leaders, resource allocation to projects and ongoing maintenance of well-functioning programmatic teams.
  • Identify, delegate and task manage project leaders to develop and implement projects falling out of the theory of change and shepherd the project leader through the program management sign off process
  • Ensure the safe and successful delivery of non violent direct action as a campaign tactic.
  • Supervise, train and mentor Campaign Team members; oversee performance management of team members including hiring and firing.
  • Coordinate relationships with and information flow between the Arctic Campaign Team and other relevant Departments including the Research Unit, Communications, Online, Grassroots Actions, Development and Legal Departments.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Greenpeace colleagues around the world, with the purpose of being able to develop and implement projects in collaboration with other Greenpeace offices.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders including reporters, politicians, corporate CEOs, funders and NGO allies; represent Greenpeace in the media and at key external events.  
  • Work with the Development Department to maintain and expand Greenpeace’s relationship with high net worth individuals and Foundation donors.
  • Oversee Arctic campaign expenditures and budget;  ensure all necessary monitoring, evaluation and reporting expectations are met
  • Perform other job-related duties as required and assigned by Campaigns Director and Senior Management

SKILLS

  • Demonstrated environmental science and policy literacy in a relevant field – working knowledge of a range of current environmental issues
  • Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and creatively
  • Strong project leadership and project planning skills to enable the delivery of projects to time, to budget and to deliver clear objectives
  • Strong communication skills - ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a wide range of people both verbally and in writing; public speaking skills; ability to make effective presentations
  • Demonstrated understanding of effective online communication to diverse audiences
  • Ability to represent Greenpeace and our work effectively to media, Greenpeace donors and others as needed
  • Ability to make and maintain strategic relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to work with journalists
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to work well with a diverse range of individuals and organizations
  • Organizational skills, including experience in project administration and ability to build and manage teams
  • Experience in non profit financial management
  • Able and willing to travel as needed
  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours
  • Commitment to progressive values and peaceful direct action as a means to affect change
  • Excellent spoken and written English; Fluency in another relevant language desired

EXPERIENCE/ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Masters degree and/or equivalent experience – in a related field including but not limited to Environmental Policy or Science, Environmental Studies, Journalism, Politics, International Relations or Law. 
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in public interest campaigning with environmental organizations preferred
  • Experience at management level in nonprofit organization, working closely with the executive director and management team, many peer managers across departments and supervising staff
