We are seeking a highly motivated individual to participate in a stream temperature monitoring project in the remote Owyhee Basin of Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada. The overarching goals are to understand effects of land management on this aquatic ecosystem (particularly the fish community), identify sites for habitat restoration, and initiate a long term record for climate change monitoring. Field work will include, but is not limited to: navigating with a GPS to predetermined locations on foot and in a vehicle or ATV using remote, poorly maintained roads; placing stream temperature data loggers under water; collecting associated habitat and other biological information, including fish identification through snorkeling; data entry using databases and GIS software. Some sampling may be conducted from inflatable kayaks. Work requires attention to detail with data collection and ability to work independently and well with others. This is a physically demanding job, involving hiking, driving, and camping in rugged terrain for long days outdoors for up to 8 — 10 days (with 2 days off per 5 days worked). Weather conditions are variable in this high desert location, with hot days (up to 95 F) and occasional strong thunderstorms. Assistant must provide his/her own camping equipment.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 season of field experience in remote rugged conditions and 3 years of college with course work in biological sciences.
  • Good humored and patient, able to work with others in remote locations under occasionally trying circumstances.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Physically able to hike in rugged desert mountain terrain for long hours on consecutive days during summer heat.
  • Ability to read and navigate by topographic maps.
  • Ability to use GPS to find site locations.
  • Valid driver's license and excellent driving record in order to be covered individually by TU insurance.
  • Ability to swim.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of field experience related to fisheries or aquatic monitoring OR 4 years of college in biological sciences plus at least 1 season of field experience in remote rugged situation.
  • Previous field work in remote locations.
  • Fish identification skills.
  • Use of 4 wheel drive vehicles and ATVs on rugged roads.
  • GPS and GIS software experience.
  • Ability to navigate a boat in Class II water.
  • Wilderness First Aid training.

Compensation:
$2,000/month stipend, plus $20/day per diem while working in the field.
