We are seeking a skilled Aquatic Ecology Technician. This permanent full-time position will be based in Christchurch and support our aquatic science team. You will be involved in a diverse range of stimulating and forward-thinking projects across our service areas, being part of a team that has forged a reputation for scientifically robust and fit-for-purpose solutions.

EOS Ecology provides industry-leading expertise for freshwater and estuary environments. Operating within the field of surface water ecology, we have particular strengths in applied research, restoration & design, investigations & monitoring, resource consent-related work, and biological laboratory services; an integrated team of communicators provide design services for science & technical information. We have a reputation for delivering applied aquatic science of the highest calibre, with a drive to identify robust and practical solutions to the problems facing freshwater and estuary systems in New Zealand.

As an Aquatic Ecology Technician your core responsibilities will be to undertake field and lab work, including associated tasks (e.g., planning & logistics, data collation, etc.). Depending on your skill level, which will be established on appointment, you could also be involved in managing the field and lab programmes, carrying out training, performing QA/QC, and contributing to study design, quotes and reporting.

We would expect the successful applicant to have:

  • A degree in aquatic ecology or equivalent;
  • Experience conducting freshwater and/or estuary ecology field surveys;
  • Experience identifying freshwater and/or estuary invertebrates;
  • The ability to follow processes and document accurately;
  • Outdoor experience and good fitness;
  • Maturity, dedication and the ability to work under pressure;
  • The ability to manage time to meet budgets and deadlines;
  • Proficient computing skills;
  • A current full NZ driver's licence; and
  • A desire to exchange knowledge, learn and grow.

Preferred but not essential:

  • 4WD experience and the ability to drive manual vehicles;
  • Electrofishing licence and freshwater fish identification skills;
  • Freshwater macrophyte identification skills; and
  • Detailed knowledge of Excel, including formulas and pivot tables.
