Position to be based from the Ocean Conservancy's Wash, DC, San Francisco or Santa Cruz office. The Aquaculture Policy Analyst provides support to the organization’s science-based advocacy efforts related to aquaculture. This position is dedicated to ensuring aquaculture develops in environmentally responsible ways by working with a team of Ocean Conservancy scientists, attorneys, policy advocates, media and outreach staff to secure strong state and federal legislation to protect ocean ecosystems from the environmental risks of open-ocean aquaculture. Responsible for assisting in the development of the broader aquaculture program within Ocean Conservancy. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Acquires, analyzes and interprets information and data related specifically to the science, technology and policy issues of offshore aquaculture development, as well as more generally to Ocean Conservancy’s conservation goals related to aquaculture. Acquires information and data on all aspects of aquaculture including the biology and ecology of farmed and potentially affected wild species, impacts on their habitats and environments, and the sociological and economic implications of aquaculture development. Analyzes, synthesizes, interprets and summarizes this information and data in written and verbal formats. Prepares reports and papers detailing these findings for use by internal and external audiences. Analyzes current and proposed legislative and management activities to ensure they are scientifically-sound and are achieving the organization’s conservation mandates. Identifies gaps in our knowledge of aquaculture and formulates strategies for filling those gaps. In collaboration with the Aquaculture Director, and Governmental Relations and Legal staff, uses the information and findings, and their policy implications, to develop strategies for affecting the changes in policy and management practices necessary for achieving sustainable aquaculture development in the United States. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s in natural resource management or science, or related field, with emphasis on marine systems and aquaculture preferred. Graduate degree(specializing in legal, policy or natural science) is highly desirable. Minimum 3-5 years professional experience with the analysis, synthesis, interpretation and reporting of a range of scientific and policy information and data required. Experience and proficiency in data analysis and management; analytical and critical thinking skills are essential. Working knowledge of ocean conservation management regulations, policy, and management agencies required. Knowledge and understanding of the current legislative landscape for U.S. aquaculture regulation is highly desirable. Experience using scientific information to effect policy change in ocean conservation or other natural resource management arenas and the ability to clearly formulate and communicate complex ideas orally and in written form is necessary. Must be able to work effectively with diverse groups including academic and government scientists, policymakers and the aquaculture and fishing industries. Ability to work with minimal supervision, set priorities among competing projects, meet objectives and deadlines, and resolve routine problems independently.
