Apprenticeships in Natural Resources Wales

Working with local colleges across Wales we are offering apprenticeships in:

  • Environmental Conservation, and Conservation Management. (6 apprenticeships)

  • Trees and Timber (4 apprenticeship)

During your apprenticeship you will shadow our staff which will allows individuals with an interest in pursuing a career in countryside & environmental management.

The Environmental Conservation, and Conservation management post role will include:

  • Practical site management (flood defence maintenance, habitat creation & restoration and forest estate activities)

  • Be able to use or be willing to be trained in the safe use of a range of tools and equipment.

  • Working as part of a team when responding to flooding and environmental incidents.

  • Learning and then applying Natural Resource Management techniques when undertaking work.

  • Dealing with and meeting members of the public informing them about the work we are carrying out and answering any questions they may have.

For this role you:

  • Must enjoy working outdoors

  • Must be physically fit

  • Must feel comfortable working in or near water 

Location:

3  posts based at Cross Hands

3  posts based  at Ciflynydd 

The Trees and Timber post role will include:

  • Working as part of a local team covering the wide range of tasks involved with managing the Forest and Woodland area – this could include harvesting, replanting ,conservation ,amenity and recreation within the woodland

  • Practical site management with the harvesting and marketing of trees and ensuring that this is done within Natural Resource Management

  • Practical site management involved with planting and caring for young trees in the Forest situation

  • Be able and willing to become familiar in the safe use of a wide range of machinery, equipment and materials used in woodland management

For this role you:

  • Must have practical aptitude

  • Must by physical fit

  • Must enjoy working outdoors

1 post based in Aberystwyth

1 post based in Welshpool

1 post based in Llandovery

1 post based in Resolven 

What does a NRW Apprenticeship involve? 

As an NRW apprentice, you will spend four days a week spent working with local teams.  As part of your apprenticeship, you will also attend a local college and study one day week for a formal qualification which is endorsed by the Welsh Government.

Our apprenticeships last from one to three years depending on the skills required.  At the end of your apprenticeship you will be able to apply for vacancies within NRW however there is no guarantee of securing permanent employment.

In return for working hard, being willing to learn and showing plenty of passion, we’ll give you:

  • 28 days annual leave

  • 8 days bank holiday

  • Pay you a salary of £13,600 

Who can apply?

Our apprenticeships are targeted to school or college leavers:

  • You will need a full driver’s licence

  • Have achieved or on target to achieve 4 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above. These must include Maths and English.

  • All applicants must be aged 18 before 1st October 2015

  • Must enjoy working outdoors

  • Must be physically fit

  • Must feel comfortable working in or near water
