Job purpose Gain valuable experience whilst assisting the Partnership organisations with habitat management and the day-to-day running of their reserves and workshops.
Description The apprenticeship offers the unique opportunity to rotate around placements with our core Partnership organisations, the RSPB, Somerset Wildlife Trust, Natural England, and the Hawk and Owl Trust. This is a very practical and varied role involving a lot of outdoor working. Safety equipment and training, where necessary, will be provided.
Knowledge of reserve management principles, techniques and difficulties will be gained through hands on experience, and new skills will be gained through on-the-job learning as well as relevant training courses. This position will demonstrate commitment and high vocational experience to future employers.
Job structure This is a full time position of 37.5 hours per week, including time spent at Bridgwater College and on training courses. Normal working hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday with ½ hour lunch break, however there may be some variation in start and finish times, with occasional need to work early mornings, evenings or weekends.
Successful candidates will be required to complete a 12 week paid trial period before enrolling on the qualification at Bridgwater College.
The length of employment will be 18 months (including the trial period).
Working Relationships Internal: All SWT staff and volunteers.
External: Staff and students from Bridgwater College, all staff, volunteers and members from partner organisations, SWT members, the general public, suppliers and contacts from other Wildlife Trusts.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
? Work under the supervision of the hosting organisation?s Reserves Officer or Reserves Assistant, to carry out practical habitat management work on the organisation?s nature reserves, such as coppicing, scrub clearance, bracken/thistle cutting, fencing, installing gates, chainsaw works and brush cutting.
? Carry out the management of the workshop facilities of the hosting organisation, including making reserve signs, tool maintenance and the maintenance and repair of power tools.
? Comply with the health and safety regulations of SWT and those of the hosting organisation in carrying out all tasks.
? Work with volunteers and members of the public as required.
? Assist with events and other activities at the Avalon Marshes Centre as required.
? Assist with recording and monitoring of indicator species.
? Meet regularly with your line manager to manage your work plan and placements.
? Maintain an up to date portfolio to work towards your college qualification, and to attend training sessions at the Avalon Marshes Centre and other sites as required.
? Attend classes and meetings at Bridgwater College (Cannington Centre) as required.
? Complete any other task as reasonably requested and occasionally work outside normal office hours if necessary.
