The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is the UK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. Working in partnership with the research community, policy makers, industry and society, CEH undertakes cutting edge research to deliver world class solutions to the most complex environmental challenges facing humankind. CEH has an annual turnover of £35 million, and employs staff across four sites; the headquarters is at Wallingford with further sites at Bangor, Edinburgh and Lancaster.

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed software developer to build data dissemination and visualization apps which showcases CEH internationally renowned environmental science.  You will be working within an agile team on both front and back end, designing and coding new features and improving existing ones.  In addition you will be working with science staff to identify and develop new applications facilitate the delivery of CEH’s science strategy. 

Appropriate training will be provided in a number of areas to assist you to increase your knowledge and maintain skills in the latest technologies.

About you

It is essential that you have a degree (2:1) or MSc in Computer Science. You will have excellent numeric and mathematic skills. You will be able to work independently with minimal supervision, keeping managers appraised as appropriate. You will be able to communicate clearly, concisely and accurately in plain language for all forms of business and external communications. Proven ability of server side development, specifically Java and the Spring framework as well as experience of web development e.g. HTML5, JavaScript including MVC frameworks (backbone/Angular) and CSS including CSS pre-processors (LESS/SASS). You will have expertise of scripting using bash, python, and ruby, experience of using version control e.g. Git, SVN or Mercurial. You will have knowledge of automated testing e.g. unit, integration and end to end. Knowledge of Linux server management and automation tools such as Terraform, Packer, Puppet, Ansible, Docker or Vagrant would be an advantage. Willingness and ability to work overseas may be required.

Eligibility to apply
