The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is the UK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. Working in partnership with the research community, policy makers, industry and society, CEH undertakes cutting edge research to deliver world class solutions to the most complex environmental challenges facing humankind. CEH has an annual turnover of £35 million, and employs staff across four sites; the headquarters is at Wallingford with further sites at Bangor, Edinburgh and Lancaster.

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed application integration developer to build and maintain the applications and infrastructure required to support data dissemination and applications which showcase CEH internationally renowned environmental science.

You will work collaboratively to assess and make available new computational software systems (especially cloud and cluster-based data processing) to ensure CEH application developers can take advantage of new capabilities for cloud-based data analytics systems (e.g. Spark-based parallel data processing within data labs) or large-scale gridded data processing and delivery systems (e.g. Terabyte scale data services). You will deploy and operate these applications and systems using automated tools and techniques.

Key activities include:

• development of innovative ways to automate and streamline our data delivery and data integration systems
• work with corporate IT to help unify software development and software operations
• working closely with scientists to identify and develop new tools for delivery of their science, including explaining technical concepts to a non-technical audience
• collaborate with the team and contribute to innovative technical solutions to meet scientists and EIDC requirements.
  

About you

You must have a strong background in Linux/Unix administration with proven skills in automation/configuration management using either Puppet, Ansible or an equivalent.

You will have the ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and cloud services.

You should have a working understanding of code and script, e.g. PHP, Python, Bash or equivalent with proven skills in using version control e.g. Git, SVN or Mercurial.
