The SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR THE CONSERVATION OF THE CONGO BASIN ECOSYSTEM (PACEBCo)
aims to conserve the world's second largest tropical forest in terms of its area after the Amazon. The Congo Basin covers an area of 4,000,000 km2. The program of the Community of Central African States (ECCAS) is a response to the continued degradation of this forest and climate change. The direct beneficiaries of the program are 58 million people living in the six ecological landscapes retained in the ten member countries of the African Forest Commission (COMIFAC).

The Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
contributes to human welfare, to environmental conservation and equity by conducting research on policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries. CIFOR is one of 15 CGIAR centers, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, with headquarters based in Bogor, Indonesia. CIFOR also employs scientists and support services located in offices in Asia, Africa and South America. It operates in over 30 countries around the world and has links with researchers in over 50 international, regional and national.

The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) has awarded a grant from the African Development Fund (ADF) in different currencies, to support the implementation of the Convergence Plan of Forestry Commission of Central Africa (COMIFAC) through the Program funding to support the conservation of ecosystems in the Congo Basin (PACEBCo). She hears some of the funds allocated to the implementation of work under the agreement signed with CIFOR and who is the project"Climate change and forests in the Congo Basin: synergies between adaptation and mitigation" COBAM abbreviated, as part of the implementation of Phase 2 of component 2 of PACEBCo.

The project will contribute to the development of an appropriate response to overcome the vulnerability to climate change in the landscapes of the Congo basin, by providing decision makers, practitioners and local community information, analysis and tools to design and implement policies and plans for adaptation to climate change and reducing emissions of carbon in forests of the Congo Basin, with impacts equitable and co-benefits of reducing poverty, improving ecosystem services other than carbon , and protection of livelihoods and local rights.

As part of the implementation of the project COBAM, CIFOR research a charge of project monitoring drivers.

Responsible for the monitoring of pilot projects will be responsible to monitor and support the various pilot REDD and those related to adaptation occurring in the landscapes of PACEBCo.

The responsibilities of the responsible monitoring of pilot projects are:

Under the guidance of project leaders, responsible for the monitoring mission will be to sponsor them by training them and supporting them in the following areas:

  • Definition of project boundary
  • Site characterization
  • Supervision of studies to establish the state of the biophysical standpoint, economic, social, governance, vulnerability, and how land use, etc..
  • Identification and consultation with stakeholders and partners
  • Participatory identification of activities (adaptation and mitigation) to conduct
  • Analysis of benefits and costs of activities related to adaptation and mitigation;
  • Seeking funding for adaptation and mitigation 
  • Participatory planning
  • Monitoring the implementation of adaptation options and mitigation identified
  • Design and implementation of a plan for monitoring and evaluation

Moreover, he or she must ensure the following related activities:

  • Supervise national consultants on specific subjects
  • Writing reports, working documents other documents spread
  • Write scientific articles, flyers and posters
  • Work with other areas of research at CIFOR

Desired profile

  • Training, experience and technical knowledge required:
    • Masters level degree or higher in social and economic sciences, environmental sciences, forestry or related field
    • 8 years minimum professional experience in the areas of proven environmental management
    • 3 years minimum professional experience in the field of climate change and forests
    • Very good knowledge of the REDD and certification
    • Experience in assembling and managing projects
    • English and French current written and spoken
    • Very good writing skills
  • Personal qualities:
    • Taste of teamwork and team management in a multicultural context;
    • Personal organizational skills, planning and management of multiple tasks.

Terms

  • Based in Yaounde, Cameroon for a period of one year renewable.
  • Earnings by qualification and experience.
