Description

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking an Animal Crimes Specialist to join the Animal Cruelty Rescue and Response team. This incumbent will respond to and handle constituent complaints and inquiries regarding animal cruelty, puppy mills and animal fighting, and prioritize the complaints and follow-up with law enforcement officials when needed.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Responding to complaints of animal cruelty by reaching out to complainants and law enforcement officials to determine best course of action to resolve the situation and evaluate those complaints to determine the ideal level of involvement for each case reported;
  • Providing guidance and resources to law enforcement and other public officials on the investigation, prosecution and/or resolution of cruelty cases;
  • Maintaining the database of complaints regarding cruelty complaints received;
  • Developing and maintaining consistent internal communication with State Affairs and other relevant HSUS staff on cruelty issues.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required;
  • Minimum three years of animal control, humane law enforcement, investigation, and management of animal cruelty complaints;
  • Prior experience providing court testimony related to animal cruelty and neglect investigations preferred;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with proven ability to exercise patience and diplomacy in dealing with the public and constituents;
  • Strong computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel with attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of animal protection issues, desired;
  • Must be willing and able to travel on short notice.
