CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research’s Atmosphere-Land Observation and Assessment Research Program seeks to appoint an analytical chemist, environmental scientist, or chemical engineer to work as part of a team that conducts research into the global biochemical cycles of greenhouse gases, ozone depleting gases, and related species. A major focus of the team’s work is to establish atmospheric distributions of these gases and some of their isotopes by analysing air samples obtained from a global network of sampling stations and then using the measurements in interpretation and reporting activities, with an emphasis on experimental work. The focus of this position is to take a key role in the operation of the global flask sampling network, and sites in an Australian greenhouse gas network. This includes: high precision gas analysis; network logistics; instrument calibration; assistance with the implementation of upgraded analytical techniques; and assistance with the implementation and maintenance of improved methods for data management and processing.

Duities will include:

  • High precision analysis of air samples for concentration and isotopic composition of greenhouse and related trace gases, using gas chromatography, infrared and laser absorption techniques, cavity ring down spectroscopy and/or mass spectrometry
  • Maintenance of instruments at field sites in Australia.
  • Use and development of custom software for various data processing and instrument control applications
  • Reporting of results through oral and written presentations.

Location:     Aspendale, Victoria
Salary:         $55K - $70K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will have:

  • A tertiary degree (B.Sc.) in chemistry, science, engineering or related discipline
  • A current drivers licence
  • Demonstrated aptitude for laboratory work with analytical instrumentation such as gas chromatography, infra-red and laser absorption techniques, cavity ring down spectroscopy, and/or mass spectrometry techniques
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document results and communicate effectively with colleagues and clients in order to meet project goals and timelines
