Overview:
The Conservation Coordinator, Parkland and Boreal is responsible for the delivery of conservation programs on behalf of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in the Parkland and Boreal Regions of central and northern Alberta.  The Conservation Coordinator will report directly to the Manager of Conservation Operations in Edmonton.  Externally, the Conservation Coordinator will work with local landowners, partner organizations, conservation volunteers, funders and others.   Internally, the Conservation Coordinator will work closely and cooperatively with other Conservation and Stewardship department team members and other Alberta Regional staff.

Responsibilities:

1.  Land Stewardship
• Identify and implement land stewardship activities that enhance parkland and boreal Natural Area Conservation plans developed by NCC (e.g. range and riparian management, invasive species management).
• Develop and implement property management plans for NCC-owned properties.
• Coordinate compliance monitoring program; effectively deal with any issues identified.
• Assist with the design and implementation of the parkland and boreal effectiveness monitoring program.
• Hire, train and supervise Summer Conservation Interns.
• Assist in the commission and coordination of baseline documentation reports for new NCC projects.
• Administer grazing leases, including development of annual lease agreements and collection of grazing records.

2.  Partnerships
• Establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with landowners working with NCC and other members of the local community.
• Coordinate various extension/outreach events which encourage community members to develop positive land stewardship practices.
• Work with the Conservation Coordinator, Volunteers to plan and implement Conservation Volunteers Program events in the region.
• Represent NCC on various committees and at meetings or workshops related to land conservation.

3. Communications and Development
• In collaboration with the Director, Development & Communications, create proposals and related materials for use in soliciting individual, foundation and corporate gifts;
• Ensure that all donor and campaign gift information is recorded, tracked, and communicated in an accurate and timely manner for reporting and other purposes;
• Managing proposal and reporting dates and reminders to meet donor obligations;
o Managing and updating donor histories in Raisers Edge and the Prospect Management Database systems;
o Fielding enquiries from donors and potential donors;
• Composing and editing donor correspondence as necessary;
• Ensuring that no program-related commitments are made to donors without the agreement of the Director, Development & Communications and relevant Program Manager and/or senior science, stewardship and securement staff.

4.  Land Securement
• Assist with land securement projects, as directed by the Manager of Conservation Operations, that may occur in the region, following established procedures and protocols.  This includes negotiations, preparation of legal agreements, preparation of Conservation Project Summaries and budgets, and reporting to funders.

5.  Conservation Planning
• Assist with the development of Natural Area Conservation Plans and their annual reports.


Skills and Aptitudes:
 The Conservation Coordinator, Parkland & Boreal requires:
• The ability to build and support effective partnerships, both within the region and within NCC, to achieve the organization’s goals;
• Excellent problem solving, planning and organizational skills, and attention to detail and timelines;
• A Bachelor’s Degree in ecology, conservation biology or related discipline with 3-5 years of directly related experience, or the equivalent;
• Comfortable working in a team setting and capable of easily communicating with a wide range of people from the public and private sectors;
• Experience in delivering land/resource management programs in a rural community, including working with land owners to implement land use/land management changes is highly desirable;
• Negotiation skills and experience with conservation real estate preferred;
• Proficient with MS Office Suite, and some knowledge of database and GIS software is beneficial;
• Demonstrated experience in making public presentations;
• Competent writer for proposals, business correspondence and donor acknowledgements;
• Ability to manage highly confidential material;
• Entrepreneurial, with a strong ability to prepare and manage timelines, goals and expectations wisely;
• Must be prepared to travel and work flexible hours at times;
• Committed to the cause and mission of the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
