The Development Worker (DW), working as an Agro-ecology and Extension Services Adviser will provide Environment Africa (EA) with technical assistance to build the knowledge and capacities of staff to develop and improve production systems among small scale communal farmers. The principal focus will involve introducing cost effective and environmentally sustainable farming methods for both food crops and forest products. The DW will work in collaboration with another DW who is focusing on value addition and marketing of produce. S/he will support the introduction of agro-ecological production units in five local communities where EA is already engaged. In collaboration with the DW already in place, the adviser will help develop sustainable livelihoods among the participating communities. To contribute towards country and regional level policies on the environment and food security, the DW will work with other Progressio DWs in Zimbabwe and Malawi to research and publish findings relating to the production of bio-fuel crops including Jatropha and assess their implications for food security. The DW will also provide information on lessons learnt from the project to help improve agricultural extension services in both Malawi and Zimbabwe.
