DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision of the Director and the direct supervision of the team leader of sustainable crop production intensification, the incumbent will contribute to FAO’s Strategic Objective A on sustainable crop production intensification focusing on provision of technical support to national programmes with principal emphasis on production systems and related issues, such as ecosystem services and biodiversity. In particular, will:

  • Contribute to the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services through an ecosystem approach;
  • Participate in the preparation of technical documents and studies related to sustainable crop production intensification and the conservation and sustainable use of agricultural biodiversity (including crop and crop-associated biodiversity especially within the context of broader ecosystem resilience issues);
  • Contribute to the provision of technical advice and preparation of documentation related to agricultural biodiversity at national and international levels; participate in the development of National Agricultural Biodiversity Programmes (NABP);
  • Participate in the design and formulation of projects on sustainable crop production intensification and agricultural biodiversity;
  • Contribute to and provide technical backstopping in the development, implementation, coordination and monitoring of sustainable crop production intensification and agricultural biodiversity-related projects including GEF funded projects;
  • Prepare documents requested for intergovernmental meetings (such as the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA), the IT-PGRFA, the Commission on Sustainable Development, the Convention on Biological Diversity).
  • Prepare and participate in technical meetings and training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:

  • Advanced University Degree in Agricultural Sciences, Environment or Ecology
  • Five years of relevant experience in the field of sustainable agriculture and the environment, which included technical and policy aspects on issues related to biodiversity, at international level
  • Working knowledge of two of the following languages: French, English, Spanish

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  • Extent of working experience in sustainable agriculture and the environment at national and international level
  • Extent of experience in the development and design of projects related to sustainable crop production intensification and agricultural biodiversity
  • Extent of experience in the provision of timely technical advice related to sustainable crop production intensification and agricultural biodiversity
  • Relevance of academic qualifications
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Quality of both written and oral communication skills

Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.

REMUNERATION

Level P-3 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 92,510 US$ 116,339 (without dependants) and from US$ 99,106 to US$ 125,078 (with dependants)
