Affiliate Advocacy Coordinator

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a global non-profit environmental organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists.  We have offices in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Beijing, China.  Our staff of over 350 includes lawyers, scientists, economists, and policy experts who work to protect the environment and public health through advocacy and education.

Position Summary:  The individual in this role is responsible for coordinating federal advocacy for NRDC’s top volunteers and affiliate groups, the majority of whom are high-level donors.  Additional responsibilities include drafting donor updates on breaking legislative news, writing proposals and reports for high-level individual and foundation donors, and serving as the Washington DC point person for all NRDC development matters.

Essential Functions: 

  • Design and implement advocacy strategies for volunteers and affiliate groups that (a) advance policy goals and (b) strengthen relationships between volunteers and the institution. This includes:
    • Researching and tracking relationships and interactions between volunteers and policy-makers;
    • Keeping donors informed of progress toward federal policy goals by planning teleconferences, drafting email updates, and answering individual questions; and  
    • Planning federal lobby trips for volunteers and affiliate groups.
  • Prepare correspondence with individual major donors and foundation donors including proposals, reports, and correspondence
  • Coordinate with communications team to plan DC-area events
  • Fulfill equivalent volunteer management responsibilities for the NRDC Action Fund
Required Skills

Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

  • Strong writing skills
  • Familiarity with the federal legislative process
  • Political donation research
  • Team-orientation; must work closely with both program and development staff to achieve goals
  • Ability to interact effectively with high-level volunteer in-person, by phone, and by email
  • Meeting and event planning experience
