Description |
The Earth Sciences Department (ES-BSC) was established with the objective of carrying out research in Earth system modelling, initially focusing on atmospheric physics and chemistry. The group has as main topics of research: air quality modelling, mineral dust modelling, meteorological modelling, geophysical flows modelling and global and regional climate modelling. It belongs to the the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain BSC-CNS (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación) that manages MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe.
In the dust and aerosol research area, ES-BSC provides daily operational forecasts of mineral dust for the Euro-Mediterranean and the East Asia region based on the Dust Regional Atmospheric Model (DREAM), designed to simulate the atmospheric cycle of mineral dust (http://www.bsc.es/projects/earthscience/DREAM). Also, the group leads a World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) initiative to create the Regional Centre for Sand and Dust Storm Warning and Assessment System (SDSWS). This Regional Centre will deal with both operational and scientific aspects related to atmospheric dust monitoring and forecasting. Another main project of the group is the development of a global-to-regional / hydrostatic-non hydrostatic dust model coupled on-line to a new unified model (NMMb) in collaboration with NCEP. The Earth Sciences Department (ES-BSC) offers a Research Position in the area of Mineral Dust Modelling. The successful candidate will strongly contribute to the aerosol and mineral dust research lines of ES-BSC. He/She will work in an international research environment and will have access to MareNostrum computational resources for the proposed tasks. The aim of this position is to go ahead with the research line in aerosol and mineral dust, maintaining and further developing the operational dust model and actively participating in the WMO Regional Centre for Sand and Dust Storm Warning System (SDSWS) for North Africa and Europe. The candidate will closely work and collaborate with the other ES-BSC modelling groups on the implementation of the global/regional atmospheric model under development, specifically coupling a multi-component aerosol module within the global/regional model with the objective to develop a fully chemical weather prediction system able to resolve gas-aerosol-meteorology interactions from meso to global scales. The candidate is expected to have a leading role in the development of ES-BSC's expertise in aerosol modelling and he/she is expected to promote new projects and address key scientific questions in his/her area of expertise. The work will be carried out in an interdisciplinary working group and has a strong focus on model application and development. Ample opportunities are provided for addressing research questions related to the above outline description of work and to participate and lead scientific projects. Conditions:
