Bird Studies Canada (BSC)  Atlantic Region is seeking a skilled field biologist to assess habitat for swallows and Chimney Swifts beginning June 1, 2015 for 8 to 12 weeks. The candidate will be responsible for piloting presence/absence surveys and barn surveys for Chimney Swifts and swallow species in agricultural areas. The candidate will be based out of Bird Studies Canada's Sackville, New Brunswick office and will be required to travel throughout the Tantramar region and Southwest Nova Scotia. Field work will primarily consist of roadside surveys along pre-determined routes. Visit www.birdscanada.org/volunteer/acswifts for more information on BSC's Aerial Insectivore Conservation program.

The following skills and experience are essential:

  • Identify Chimney Swift as well as Barn, Bank, Cliff and Tree Swallow by sight and sound
  • Comfortable working long days, sometimes including extensive driving
  • Able to work in a team environment " Able to work independently and with little supervision
  • Navigation by map and GPS in rural areas and rough roads
  • Candidates must also be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid driver's license
  • Able to begin work by June 1, 2015

 Additional asset skills:

  • First Aid Certification (successful candidates must obtain first aid certification prior to start date)
  • Excellent communication skills and experience liaising with landowners
  • Providing own vehicle is an asset but not required

Salary: $2,300 - $2,500 per month. Food, accommodation (hotels, field stations, occasional tenting) and transport while in the field are provided.
