The Pembina Institute is seeking an experienced Advisor to join our team.

Working with communities across Canada, the Pembina Institute helps municipal governments develop and implement on-the-ground energy efficiency and renewable energy (EE/RE) projects and policy change. The Advisor will support the development and execution of community- and provincially-based projects in Alberta. This work also assists the Pembina Institute in advancing policy change at the provincial and federal levels.

The Advisor will report to the Alberta Associate Director and will work closely with the Director of Energy Efficiency. Based in Pembina’s Calgary office, the Advisor will also support other staff on the full range of organizational policy change issues through both consulting and policy advocacy with a focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy and the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The full-time position may require some travel and occasional work on evenings and weekends.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary rate is competitive for an Advisor in the non-profit sector and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Roles and Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities, deliverables, and accountabilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the development and communication of opportunities for increasing energy efficiency and renewable energy in Alberta with a focus on the role of provincial and municipal governments
  • Supporting the development of a province-wide energy efficiency network and working to sustain a provincial energy efficiency association
  • Supporting and/or leading energy and GHG planning with Alberta municipalities.

Specifically, the successful candidate will:

  • Write reports and other documents summarizing the potential of energy efficiency and other opportunities to reduce GHG emissions
  • Lead small and large, two- to five-person projects
  • Communicate with clients
  • Manage the development of relationships with stakeholder groups
  • Support stakeholder engagement events
  • Help to identify and develop strategic project opportunities
  • Develop new projects, enhancing client relationships and securing project funding
  • Research various aspects of climate and energy technologies, applications and policies
  • Perform technical, financial and policy analysis for energy and emissions reduction opportunities
  • Complete community energy and emissions reductions plans
  • Develop strategic approaches to moving energy policies and projects at both the local and provincial levels
  • Communicate lessons learned to local, provincial and federal decision-makers and stakeholders

Skills and Qualifications

Candidates must clearly reflect the following skills and experience in their application:

Smarts

You should think incisively, write clearly and concisely, be at ease with numbers, and have sound knowledge of energy and sustainability issues. We’re looking for:

  • An undergraduate or a graduate degree in a relevant subject area
  • Experience working for government, industry, a consulting firm or non-profit in energy policy, energy efficiency, renewable energy and/or greenhouse gas emissions reduction
  • Demonstrated research skills, including an ability to quickly absorb, evaluate, and communicate new information
  • Experience with both technical and popular writing
  • Attention to detail and ability to produce accurate work with minimal supervision
  • Experience and interest in strategic planning

Drive

You should be a self-starter and able to identify and focus on the most strategic tasks when you have competing demands on your time. We’re looking for:

  • Visible time management and self-organization skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and to coordinate projects
  • Demonstrated ability for managing multiple projects while remaining focused on priority tasks
  • Proven work ethic and initiative
  • Willingness to accept additional tasks and responsibilities
  • Ability to work with limited supervision at times

People Skills

You should enjoy teamwork and be able to communicate and connect with a wide range of people; for example, an elected official, government employee, utility representative, a First Nation elder, or a quiet workshop participant. We’re looking for:

  • Experience with delivering presentations in public and private settings
  • An ability to tailor your message to your audience
  • A good sense of humour

Passion for Social Change

You should be passionate about creating social change and committed to sustainability in your own life. We’re looking for:

  • Work or volunteer experience related to social change, on energy or resource issues, in public advocacy or outreach, etc.
  • Familiarity with relevant topics such as natural resource management practices, environmental law, provincial and national politics, etc. 
  • Flexibility and Resourcefulness
  • You should be well aware of, and comfortable with, the unique challenges of working in a medium-sized non-profit organization. We’re looking for:
  • A demonstrated ability to find resourceful and practical solutions to capacity and time constraints
  • Experience in effectively handling administrative tasks, such as managing project budgets, work planning and reporting
  • Prior experience with a non-governmental organization, or in a small business
