Administrator/Manager – Papua New Guinea

The RSPCA in Papua New Guinea is a charity organisation that helps protect the rights of animals, and is seeking to employee a person who can manage and co-ordinate their operations which include the Veterinary clinic and Dog Pound facility. Based in Port Moresby, the ideal person will have business management skills, have empathy for animals, and possess exception organisational and communications skills. You will thrive on diversity in your work, and feel comfortable working with people ranging from dog collectors to government officials and executive committees. Job Background:

The RSPCA in Papua New Guinea is a charity, which also owns and operates the only private veterinary clinic in the country. Established in 1976, it has been significantly active in the last 5 years. It is currently managed by a committee consisting of 9 professional members. Staffing of the RSPCA consists of a full time Veterinarian, 2 clinic office staff, dog collectors, kennel hands, and out-sourced professional services. The committee currently seeks to expand the operations, and are recruiting a full time administrator/manager of the RSPCA, an additional Veterinarian, a Vet nurse and trainee Vet nurse, and volunteer overseas business advisors.

Job Description - Overview

As Administrator/Manager of the RSPCA based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, you will be responsible for managing the total operations and staffing supervision of the Veterinary clinic and dog Pound facility. Your busy days will include: the efficient running of all operations and activities, grow the services provided by the RSPCA and encourage ways to promote profitability; create, co-ordinate and  organising marketing and promotional activities to enhance the profile of the RSPCA and its activities both locally and nationally; co-ordinate animal education programs in schools throughout PNG; liaise with, organise and co-ordinate visiting trainers, educators and consultants; attend RSPCA committee meetings and present progress reports on the activities of the RSPCA; devise and execute initiatives and services which can be duplicated throughout PNG;  develop and organise fundraising activities which will enhance the opportunity for the RSPCA to receive funds and sponsorship donations;  and seek out grant opportunities and write submissions where appropriate.

Selection Criteria - (each must be addressed)

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrated high level organisational and co-ordination skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to develop a rapport with people from all walks of life and educational levels
  • Have empathy towards animals, and enjoy dogs and cats
  • Tertiary qualification in business management, marketing, or office administration, with a minimum 5 years relevant experience 
  • A firm understanding of financial management, budgets and reports
  • Culturally adaptable, and a proven ability to work in a challenging environment
  • Adaptable to change and to embrace with enthusiasm
  • Demonstrated supervisory and staff management skills
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to be flexible on the job eg; from occasionally wearing boots at the Pound, to presenting high level reports to executive committees
  • Fluent in English both written and spoken
  • Results orientated and a passion to excel
  • High level computer literacy skills using Microsoft software applications, including financial spreadsheets
  • A current drivers licence

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working in PNG or in a similar Melanesian culture
  • Marketing and fundraising experience
  • Experience in developing and executing advertising and/or promotional campaigns
  • Understanding of financial accounts, management and budget control
  • Experience working with committees
  • Creativity and ability to ‘think outside the square’
  • A desire to live and work in a developing country
  • Ability to speak Tok Pisin English
  • Ability to make effective speeches and presentations to public groups and executive committees

Remuneration

The salary package will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the successful candidate. This package can include medical insurance, 4 weeks annual leave and return airfare to Australia or to a destination of equivalent cost, access to a fully maintained vehicle, and on-site accommodation with security.
